Fallen but not forgotten: Christmas tragedy

This photograph shows Army Sgt. Peter Neesley feeding his dogs Boris (small) and Momma (large) in Iraq. Sgt. Neesley died in Baghdad on Christmas. The photo was sent by his cousin, Terrie Pawlyk, of West Milford, N.J., who is trying to bring Boris and Momma to America.

"On Christmas morning," she wrote, "2 military men knocked on my Aunt Chris's front door and they told her my cousin Sergeant Peter Neesley had died. This was his second tour of duty and he had five months to go. He even thought he would enlist again if he could stay in the states. To make sense of this war, he took care of stray dogs and he was going to bring home 2 dogs when his tour was over. He had made them a dog house.

"My aunt and cousins Carrie, Teddy and nephew Patrick are in shock and are numb. The one thing that would help is bringing home those 2 dogs. Our family has been in touch with a friend of Peter's over in Iraq and he is taking care of these 2 dogs and Peter's dog house. This would help the entire family if these two dogs were sent to live out their lives at Aunt Chris's. Please Help!"

If you can help in any way, please e-mail Terrie at tepawlyk@aol.com or put a message in our comment box.

Terrie's cousin was among four soldiers and one airman who died last week in Iraq and Afghanistan.

1. Air Force Senior Airman Nicholas Eischen, 24, of Sangor, Calif., died in his sleep Christmas Eve at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan, where he was a hospital emergency room technician. His family knew of no health problems. Eischen is survived by his widow, Leah, and son, Braeden, 2. Eischen was the sixth graduate of his high school to die in Iraq or Afghanistan. "I hate to say this, but it makes you wonder, 'Who's next?'" his high school football coach told the Fresno Bee.

2. Army Sgt. Peter Neesley, 28, recently visited Pere Gabriel Richard Elementary School in his hometown of Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich. He led the students in the Pledge of Allegiance and answered their many questions. "Thanks for spending valuable time with us, Sgt. Neesley," the school's newsletter said. "Don't forget to write and keep in touch." Neesley died Christmas Day in Baghdad of an undetermined cause. His death was under investigation. Neesley was with the Third Infantry Division.

3. Army Sgt. Bryan Tutten, 33, of St. Augustine, Fla., was expected home within a month from his second tour in Iraq. "It killed him that he was on his first tour when his daughter was born and was in Iraq when his son was born," his father-in-law told News4Jax. Tutten, with the 82nd Airborne Division, was killed on Christmas Day by a roadside bomb in Balad. He is survived by Constandina, his high school sweetheart and wife of 10 years, and their daughter, Catherine, 4, and infant son, Gareth.

4. Army Capt. Rowdy Inman, 38, of Panorama Village, Texas, was a graduate of Sam Houston State University and a veteran of Desert Storm. Inman, with the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, was shot and killed Dec. 26 in Mosul by an Iraqi soldier. "Captain Inman was the finest example a officer should be," one of his soldiers told chron.com. "He always covered our backs no matter where we was at." Inman leaves his widow, Shannon, and children, Keeley, 7, and Gary, 4.

5. Army Sgt. Benjamin Portell, 27, of Bakersfield, Calif., was the middle of three brothers, all of whom served in the military. His older brother, Mike, currently serves in Iraq. "When he [Benjamin] signed up, he was out running, getting ready for the physical test, making sure he could pass all that," a friend told KGET. "He was gung-ho about it." Portell was less than two weeks into his second tour in Iraq when he was shot and killed along with Capt. Inman by an Iraqi soldier. Portell is survived by his wife of seven months, Michelle.

Dear John,
Our family cannot tell you how grateful we are that you took interest in our cousin Sgt. Peter Neesley's story. You are such a good man. Let's hope this story can help us bring home the dogs. God Bless you and your family John. I will never forget the help you have given myself and my family.
Peter touched the lives of so many close friends, we grew up together and I know it would bring joy to so many hearts to know that the animals he cared for are brought safely home.  Please, do whatever you can!
John,
Thank you for your story on Peter. He was such an amazing soul, he truly loved animals and bringing home Boris and Mama would mean so much to his family and friends. And no doubt bring Peter a little closer to home to help his family through this horrible time. We love you always Peter and miss you. Please keep up the hard work John and thank you !
Thank you for posting this story.  Peter was a kind soul.  Peter was a father figure to his nephew Patrick who would help to care for the dogs. Patrick has said he would love to have the dogs to walk and cuddle with at night.  Though nothing can bring back Peter, bringing the dogs home would be like getting a little bit of Peter back.
so very proud of this guy and every other soldier fighting for freedom..God bless his family and the dogs and i hope they're united soon...luv and appreciation from texas
I am looking for someone with the ability to stand up to the VA on behalf of a soldier whose name I don't know.  A friend met him at James Haley VA Hospital in Tampa, and he told him that because he was not in the army for 6 months, he isn't entitled to VA benefits. He lost a leg.  They referred him to SSI.  21 years old, he had just enlisted in the National Guard when they were called up.  It was less than 6 months when he sustained his injuries.  The kid was distraught.
If we don't care for our guys, why should they care about our freedom?  Someone needs to forego the rules on his behalf.
John,

Thank you for helping spread the word about our dear friend Peter.  He was a wonderful man and I value every moment of our friendship.  Boris and Mama meant so much to Peter and bringing them to his family would mean a great deal to everyone.
Petes family needs those dogs, get them back to the states!!!
I just wanted you to know that I have sent my own letters to Michigan Senator Carl Levin, Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm, and Wisconsin Senator Russ Feingold (since I live in Wisconsin). The letter is below. I also reached out to Best Friends and the Humane Society. If there are other people I should be writing, please let me know… My thoughts and prayers are with Peter's family and his pups.

I am writing on behalf of the family of Sgt. Peter Neesley, who passed away while serving in the U.S. military on Christmas Day. Sgt. Neesley not only left behind his family, but he left behind two companions by the names of Mama and Boris. Mama and Boris are strays that Sgt. Neesley befriended while in Baghdad. His intent before his untimely death was to bring these two dogs back home with him to Grosse Point Farms, Michigan. Unfortunately, his life ended before he could fulfill that wish.

Iraq has caused many people much heartache. To the U.S. Military, Mama and Boris may seem like strays, but to the mother and father of Sgt. Neesley, they are a part of him.

I do not know the Neesley family personally, but their story touched my heart.  I cannot even imagine losing my son at such a young age. However, out of respect and love for our country and for our military, I ask that please help in any way to save Mama and Boris and bring them home to Michigan where a part of Sgt. Neesley’s spirit can continue.

I thank you for your time and consideration.
I don't know if this helps? http://www.baghdadpups.com
I would love to support the cause to get these 2 sweet dogs to their loving home. I did not have the please of knowing Sgt. Peter Neesley, but as an animal lover I know he would have wanted the dogs to go home to his family. In order for Sgt Neesley to rest in peace, his wishes for the dogs need to be honored. Please let me know if there is anyone to write to or email, to support the dogs coming home. Also, is the ASPCA or HSUS helping?  Thank you.
Dear John:
Thank you so much for this story.  I know the family would love to have these dogs home with them in the US. Peter can never be replaced but having these dogs will help his family heal.  With fewer casualties and with the US election frenzy going on Americans seem to be forgetting about our poor soldiers still over there.

Thank you for helping our family!
Please keep us posted on Sgt. Neesley's Dogs, Mama and Boris and let the public know if there is anything they can do to help.
I hope and pray the family is able to bring the dogs to the states.
I live in Vancouver, Canada, and after reading about Peter and his dogs, I gave cash donations to Military Mascots as well as to Peter's family to help bring the 2 doggies to the U.S. I am asking everyone else to PLEASE help Military Mascots who help others in the service bring their pets back home too, and PLEASE send money to help Peter's family bring back his 2 dogs to the U.S. It costs about $3,000.00 plus per dog, from what I understand. We in Canada wouldn't be much without the brave service men and women in the U.S. and this is the LEAST I can do to help. This story touched my heart and I hope it touches yours. You all can help today....right now. Thank you! Cathrine
Thanks to Peters parents for bringing such a wonderful man into this world and thanks to Peter for taking the oppurtunity to do something wonderful with that life!!!!! I am hoping to see his dogs go home to his family. It happened for a local girl here with her dog only her dog was a military dog......God Bless
On behalf of The Neesley Family and our entire family, we want to thank you all for your support, kind words and touching emails all of you have sent to our family. John, again I have to say "Thank you" for your help, coverage and support in bringing Peter's dogs home.  Our family can never thank all of you enough for the outpouring of love and concern in our quest to bring Boris and Mama home to be with Aunt Chris, Carey, Ted and Patrick who loved his uncle so very much.
We want you all to know we are not looking for donations. We just need the help to keep this story alive. So please write your Senator or local government officials.
Thank you all again for support and care you have shown our family.
God Bless you all.
We have opened a email address for ideas and or if you want to find out how to make a donation at petersdogs@yahoo.com. Thank you for all your kind thoughts and support. The Neesley Family
John,
Thanks for writing about Peter...
I hope his dogs can come home this would mean so much to his family.  Such a wonderful soul we miss you so much Peter!
Dear John,
That is such a sad story. My father died in Vietnam on Christmas eve, so I know what the pain is like. Is there any way you can help get the 2 dogs home to his aunt? Can you take this story to the networks? Please let us know if the dogs get home. Bless him and his family.
To all concerned: Peter Nessley is a true American hero. He made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms. One of the ways we can honor him is to have these dogs he adopted, Borris & Momma, brought back to the states for his family, "Aunt Chris" to love in Peter's place. Please all, assist in any way you can, to honor our fallen hero. In Remembrance, Susan Stanley (Gold Star Mother)
Just heard great news- after a great colaboration, Boris and Mama are safely in the hands of the Neesley family.  Rich Crook, Rapid Response manager at Best Friends delivered them today.  He personally flew over to get them, then drove them to the Neesley home!  Great job Rich!  See more at Bestfriends.org
We recently saw your story on the news and are so very sorry for the loss of Peter.  We send you our prayers.  Sincerely Jack & Judy Neesley.
Dear Terrie,
I read on a separate website that you were able to get Boris and Mamma home.  That is so wonderful.  Your son sounds like a wonderful man.  I am so sorry for your loss.  Your story really touched me.  We need more people like you and Peter in this world.  Good luck with your new dogs!

Best wishes,
Brooke
sorry about your loss may godbless you
