Tale of the Tape

Posted: Sunday, December 30, 2007 4:39 PM by Daily Nightly Editor

By Lester Holt, NBC News anchor

In an era where video cameras seem to be rolling wherever people are gathered, I've been waiting for a piece of video tape to emerge from the Benazir Bhutto assassination that might shed useful light on the question of whether she was shot to death, or, as the Pakistani government contends, she died from striking her head on the roof of the vehicle she was in.

The wait may be over. We received some video today that shows the gunman taking aim and Mrs. Bhutto standing in the vehicle's sunroof.  The shots are heard and we see Bhutto either fall or dive forward.  We also see the explosion that follows. I've now watched the tape at least six times, paying sharp attention to the movement of her hair, her veil, and her torso as the shots are heard.  I can tell you the video is not conclusive either way, but it may be the closet thing to a "Zapruder film" that we've seen from the Bhutto murder.  My guess is the tape will do little to change the opinions of those who believe the Pakistani government is being untruthful.

Jonathan Rugman, a correspondent from our British partner ITN has put together a terrific analysis of the tape along with some other interesting pieces of evidence, and we will air that report on Nightly News tonight.

A new MSNBC-McClatchy poll of likely Iowa caucus voters is out, and it shows Mitt Romney has managed to overcome the Mike Huckabee surge. The other headline is some late momentum in the John Edwards camp making for a three-way dead heat among Democratic frontrunners.  We'll show you the key numbers tonight.

Erin Burnett from CNBC will come on with me tonight to talk about the 2007 housing slump and whether there are signs of a turnaround in 2008.

Also tonight, it was 35 years ago this weekend that an Eastern Airlines L-1011 slammed into the Florida Everglades, killing 101 people. Seventy-five others survived, in large part due to one man and his airboat, which pulled many of them to safety before other rescuers arrived. Recently the survivors were reunited with their "angel of mercy" at the site of the crash. NBC's Kristen Dahlgren will bring us that story.

On a personal note, as an aviation "buff" and someone who studies aircraft accident reports, the crash of that Eastern Airlines jet is one that has always stood out in my mind because of the odd circumstances of how it happened. It started with a landing gear warning light as the plane was on approach to Miami.  As the three-man crew circled in a holding pattern trying to troubleshoot the warning light, one of them accidentally bumped the control column, causing the autopilot to switch off. That produced a warning bell that none of them heard. As a result the plane began a slow, shallow descent to the ground. The crew was too preoccupied to notice until it was too late to pull up. The giant L-1011 simply "flew" into the everglades. The passengers didn't have a hint their plane was about to crash until moments before the impact. As you might expect, that accident led to big changes in the way flight crews are trained. The biggest lesson, still taught today is: no matter what may be going wrong, fly the plane first!

Thanks for checking in. I hope you can join me tonight for NBC Nightly News.

You study aircraft accident reports?

No offense, Mr. Holt, but you really need a different hobby.

As for the Bhutto assassination, however, is it really possible to hit your head hard enough in a situation such as that to where you would suffer the sort of  self-inflicted head trauma to the level that it would be fatal?

I find it very hard to believe; however, as you watch your tape, maybe you could look to see whether the car speeds up or suddenly stops.  I believe that if the car stops suddenly as she is ducking, then maybe it may very well be possible to sustain that level of severe head trauma.

Unfortunately, I doubt we'll ever know the answer.  But, I do hope that something positive can come from the death of this remarkable human being.
Good Evening Mr.Holt, First of all the video shown of the assassination of Benazir Bhutto was interesting. Seeing the people crowding around the vehicle and the man in the sunglasses lurking amongst the people looks ominous. Hearing and seeing the three shots being fired and looking at how Bhutto's hair went up along with her veil causing her to drop down does at first form the conclusion that the bullets killed her. Yet one cannot really be sure of exactly the cause of death. It is somewhat interesting how the officials changed their report on what might have killed her. I agree with you Mr.Holt that it will probably not change the minds of the people who believe the Pakastani government is being untruthful. The report from Pakistan concerning the unrest following Bhutto's death showed many people still protesting in the streets. Yet many as stated in the report are praying to find a more peaceful way to grieve. It is better to hold off on the elections until later because January 8th would be too soon. On another note it is good news that the late night shows are returning in January with new shows. Time will tell about the regular evening show schedule and award shows. Finally, the building of that navy ship is quite a moving and touching project. Having steel from the World Trade Center as part of the ship and the fact that it survived Hurricane Katrina is definitely makes this ship very historic. The motto of the ship "Never Forget" is certainly appropriate. Also, I just want to say that where I live received a very  generous amount of rain today. Every little bit helps our drought and today's rain helped quite alot. Thank you for the broadcast Mr.Holt. Only one more day of 2007. Time does go by fast. Peace to all!
Hi Lester
The news did a great job at showing what really happen, but as Americans to always believe the Government would never lie about an assassination. Musharraf learned well from the US as he destroyed the evidence at the murder site. The US did the same thing as the video of the grassy knoll that showed the killers of JFK were destroyed by the you guessed it CIA. Even with the video proof, evidence given by Mrs. Bhutto herself and the request for protection from the United States, we still will believe the Government would never lie.  Mrs. Bhutto like most Middle Eastern Leaders always prepare for the next Leadership. Now her son is left with that job. If he's smart he wont make the same mistake his Mother made by trusting the US. I hope the Pakistan people can get a Leadership that will bring peace.  Now as for the Nukes we have them well that was the US mistake.
Iowa will show just how much we're learned in the pass 7 years. As the first to vote on who should be President it's going to be interesting.  With all the candidate except Hillary Clinton having no experience I wonder what's really to pick. This isn't the Oscars where it's a once a year thing. If the US were a company would Iowa pick a CEO with no qualifications or experience, then watch the company close. Or will they pick Hillary Clinton who has taken time to get the experience and is the only one qualified for the job of President.  I know Americans don't think a woman can be President as we congratulation the first female President in Argentina and all the other female Presidents elected in other countries.  Yes and we're the leading country trying to advice Woman's Rights around the World. How stupid do we look in the World eyes. Even Mrs. Bhutto was President in her country as we hear the White House say Karen Hughes did a great job trying to get other Middle Eastern countries to give Woman Rights.  There's a pay check for doing nothing.  Now I know the Middle Eastern Woman were laughing at Mrs. Hughes and the Bush Policy which we don't follow ourselves.
Concerning Mrs. Bhuttos death...I certainly believe that the Pakastani government had something to do with it!  The current leadership seems obsessed with being "in control" and it does seem plausable that they would do anything to see to it that Mrs. Bhutto would not be elected.  The government has created confusion with the exact circumstances of her death...it is a very convenient smokescreen.  It is very clear that a change in government is needed there.  I hope her son (and husband) are up to the challenge. She was definitly a remarkable woman with a great vision for her people.
Edwards claimed in Iowa yesterday that he would stop Bush from invading Iran. So guess he's talking about when he's President. I really doubt Bush will be trying to launch an invasion of Iran from Crawford Tx. Other than that he said he'd do exactly what Bush is doing right now. Working with our European allies, telling Iran to reveal all of their programs, or face sanctions. The silly emo party clapped and cheered. I'll be glad when the writers finish their strike so this guy can go back to his job as the page on 30 rock.

Hillary was asked by George Stephanopoulos yesterday about her not attending national security meetings. She said she didn't attend the meetings, but she had access to classified information. Isn't that illegal?

Obama is going to make one fine Republican when he wakes up to the reality that it is democrat policies that destroyed the people of New Orleans long before the storm hit. If he can bring along 40% more of the black vote they can save this country from this politically correct perverted thinking Liberals dreamed up to split people apart. Watch how Hillary, and the old guard stab him in the back if he threatens her too much.
Mr. Holt, the version of the sunroof is possible.  As I wrote you earlier, my husband hit a deer on CHristmas evening and I was taken to the hospital because there was pain in my neck.  X-rays were taken and thankfully it was only a neck whip lash.  My point is under different circumstances, speed, impact,
as the doctor said my neck could have been broken and
I'm thinking it could have resulted in death or my being
paralyzed. Anyway, I will leave the news analyis to you.
Watched the film of the Bhutto incident, and have another view of what could have occurred... it appears to me that as the first shots were fired, someone inside the car grabs Mrs.Bhutto's head veil, and attempts to pull her inside the car. The force of the 'pull' could explain the rise of the veil on the opposite side of her head, as well as the inexplicable head trauma if she simply fell forward. What do you think?
