Still 2007

Posted: Friday, December 28, 2007 4:30 PM by Barbara Raab

By Lester Holt, NBC News anchor

Good day from New York. Brian is off again tonight and I'll be anchoring Nightly News.

We're at the time of the year when those lists of the year's biggest news stories are about to be published. Chances are some of them had been compiled and written prior to yesterday. Thursday's assassination of Benazir Bhutto, like the Tsunami in late December of 2004, reminds us that the "slow" holiday news periods are often anything but.

Yesterday's events are likely to spill over into one of the major stories of 2008 as the Pervez Musharraf government, and the American role in facilitating Bhutto's return to Pakistan, are cast in a critical spotlight. Tonight NBC's Andrea Mitchell will continue her reporting on how all this affects future American influence in Pakistan, and by extension the hunt for Al qaeda leaders.

On the day Bhutto was laid to rest a remarkable piece of video has emerged that appears to show the gunman taking aim just seconds before he fired. Ned Colt is in Pakistan covering the funeral, the violent reaction, and a new and very different account of how Benazir Bhutto died.

On the campaign trail in this country, where candidates were quick to weigh in on the events in Pakistan, some comments by former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee connecting the killing to the immigration issue here at home is drawing some sharp criticism. NBC's Lee Cowan will have a lot more on that.

Ann Curry will be back on tonight with a Dateline investigation into the ease of getting a bogus passport to cross just about any border.

I hope you'll join us for the Friday edition of NBC Nightly News.

Lester they say if you live long enough you see the same thing happen again. JFK was assassinated with the Harry Potter magic bullet and we know better. Now Mrs. Bhutto knew her killers, but we are to believe a bump on the head killed her and the surprise information that quickly appeared that Al Qaeda did it.  I don't think the Pakistan people are as gullible as Americans.  Somme fake stories just don't fly.  What's sad is that the public is feed the lies as if we're really that stupid.  Now I don't know what the Pakistan people will do but that make up story sounds to much like it was made in America. I guess the Law Makers feel it worked in 1963 so it will work again. US reporters are given the story and tell it as they are told to. But I really think a better lie has to be told because this one is like Swiss cheese full of holds.  To bad for Musharraf as I know he wishes Mrs. Bhutto had released that email because the lie might have worked. I also noticed that none of the reporters are saying it was Connie Rice that got Mrs. Bhutto to go back to Pakistan with the promise of support from the White House. So much for that plan, but it's good to keep Connie Rice out of the news when she fails. We really don't need for Americans to know that the US and Connie Rice were part of this plan for Pakistan.  Our concern should be should be the Nukes we gave Pakistan.  Looks like under the Bush Administration has made millions of more terrorist around the world that were not there in 2000. Young people in the Middle East see how the US has become and it's not a pretty picture, future generations will speak of the horrors that the US have done to the people of the Middle East.

Now as Iowa gets ready to vote I hope they release just how much these candidates don't know about the countries and locations of the Middle East. Rev. Huckabee thinks  Pakistan’s “eastern borders” with Afghanistan while his supporters agreed, now we know it's India who has eastern border with Pakistan.  The rest of the candidates are clue less to foreign policy and their remarks show it.  The only candidate with knowledge and experience in foreign affairs is Hillary.  But once again Americans would rather have an uneducated President who will make things worse then they are now. Iowa has always been the learner and the people that look carefully at who qualifies to be United States President.  We'll see if they did their homework or if they brought into the lies/spin/blame/propaganda being told. If Iowa fails it will end one of the most respected examples of Government research we're had in this country.  I often think of what Fred Thompson said that America would never pick a woman as President, I guess he means we would rather have an unqualified male then an experienced qualified woman.

Well on the US front gas prices will be $4.oo a gallon in 2008. I remember back in 2000 when then President Bush said the Saudis were his friends and the US would be able to get oil cheaper. Oh so much for friendship. I guess the Saudi played the Ace and waited many years as they gave then CEO George W. Bush money for his failed businesses only to now call Royal straight flush and as we see the US has given not only money but also land and weapons. Now the Saudis know how to play poker. Let's see the game they play on Cheney, as he will see them call a Royal straight flush on his plan to take Middle East oil.  Now the other losers are the American taxpayers but we did allow Bush and Cheney to stay in office so you get what you pay for.
You are right, absolutely right in that the
holiday news are not slow, and your coverage
of bhuttto was excellent.  I appreciated Mr.
Williams'
interview with the gentlemen from
"The Sorporanos" about his ordeal with depression
and the fact that you cannot remain anomaious, which is true.  I have not suffered from depression but was diagnoised as a schizaphrenia which I believe the shrink got wrong.  In his own words, "I had to put down something for the insurance company."  Obviously "spritual emeregency" would not pay the
hospital bill.  The bright side is that it has
made me more interesting to others who do not
believe I am either.  The #2 man for Ted Turner
who I met in Florida with friends I think would
vouch for me.  However I like this line and a
comforted by it "When you talk to God  I it's
called prayer and how come when God talks to
you it's call schizaprenia."  Spiritual emergency, schizraprenia, whatever, has made me a woman of
strength.  I am what I am by the grace of God
and let it not be in vain, and I am quoting St.
Paul.  Gee, delusions of grandeur on top of
everything else:o) Best for the holidays, Mr. Holt
Good Evening Mr.Holt, First of all it is hard to believe that 2007 is almost over and 2008 is just days away. There are always big news stories and they keep coming right up to the last day of the year. Now on to the broadcast. The report from Mr.Colt concerning the funeral of Benazir Bhutto was very tragic and showed just how much her supporters really will miss her. These people believe that the Pakastani government did not provide enough security for her and they are blaming them for her death. Seeing the mourners crowding around her simple wooden coffin and throwing rose petals on top of the casket again shows that she will be greatly missed by her people. When the officials spoke that she was killed by the blast and not the bullet from the gun it seems surprising because of where she was hit. The video that was shown looked very ominous with the hand holding the weapon and then the blast. Very scary indeed. This will have a big effect on the elections in January because it could be postponed, yet many in government want the election to be held. In any case it was a very tragic event and it is extremely sad that she had to perish. Hopefully something good will result from this tragedy. Only time will tell. On another note the report from Mr.Alexander about the San Francisco Zoo was troubling. If the walls were not high enough then maybe it was easy for the tiger to escape. Also if the men were taunting the tiger then possibly the animal was provoked and decided to attack because of instinct. It is so very tragic someone perished, but the other men did survive and maybe the investigation will find out more from them about this incident in the coming days. Finally, the interview that Mr.Williams conducted with the actor from the "Sopranos" was interesting. It has not been easy for him with his condition of clinical depression. I never watched the "Sopranos", but he seems like a good actor playing good roles. Certainly a poignant film he just made called "Canvas" because of how he related to the characters. One only wishes him the best of success with everything in his life. Thank you for the broadcast Mr.Holt. You have worked very hard this week and I appreciate you great efforts this week. Great job!! See you on the weekend! Try to get some rest I know it is hard. Peace to you and to all!
I can believe the concussive force of the explosion may have killed Bhutto but there are many factors which will confuse the issues.

Musharraf is the head of the government.  He is also a suspect.  His report may be 100% accurate about his lack of involvement and the cause of Bhutto's death and many will believe it just as an equal number will not.

Was Musharraf throwing suspicion away from himself when he said it is the work of terrorists and Al Qaida before the smoke had even cleared?  Did he have information he didn't pass on to the security details that he knew it would be the work of Al Q instead of another terrorist organization?  Will the U.S. help or hinder the investigation because we don't have another alternative to lead the government in Pakistan?

Even if they can prove Musharraf and his government didn't have anything to do with the assassination there will always be doubters and Pakistan will be in turmoil and the region unstable for years to come.  Reason enough for Musharraf to step down.
Speaking of Big News stories for 2007, how about Hillary Clinton's "blue dress" being caught on tape?

Hi Lester

I've just watched Brian's interview with Joey. I'm glad that Joey is able to do what he's doing.

Through his organaistion he's trying to achieve the msg to people that there should be no stigma in having a mental illness.
Link: http://www.nokiddingmetoo.org/

Having come into contact with Joey just very slightly in passing recently, I'm glad he was able to realise that his mother had had a mental illness & that he himself had depression & that he got the treatment he needed. I wish him happiness.

Happy new year everyone

RE: nightly news 12/31, year in review
It’s always interesting to recap the year’s events and celebrity milestones. However, Art Buchwald, a Pulitzer Prize winner, the humorist-columnist for more than a half-century certainly deserved to be mentioned. His political satire was unsurpassed by others.
I am responding to.

I often think of what Fred Thompson said that America would never pick a woman as President, I guess he means we would rather have an unqualified male then an experienced qualified woman.

Whenever you quote someone word for word you should supply the source. All I can presume is that your read it somewhere. I for one saw similar mention in boston.com "Thompson doesn't see a woman as president yet" December 27, 2007.
Unfortunately his words have been distorted by the media again and by people who have their own way of interpreting what he said.
In fact he has a way of saying things that others maybe wish they could but can't.
Did you by any chance catch Lester Holt's latest interview with FT over the medias zealos appetite to spread missinformation. Mr. Holt's questions were smartly answered by "I owe you nothing...."
