Zoo story

Posted: Wednesday, December 26, 2007 3:49 PM by Barbara Raab

By Lester Holt, NBC News anchor

Good day. Brian continues his week off and I'll be sitting in for him again tonight.

We'll be reporting the story so many people are talking about today, the mauling of three people by an escaped tiger at the San Francisco zoo. One of the victims was killed. The thing that has to give any zoo-goer pause is that no one can say how the tiger escaped. Her handlers say she definitely didn't exit through the door, which leaves only the possibility she managed to scale the 15-foot wide moat and 20-foot tall wall. Our Peter Alexander is working the story for us and we'll hear from him on the newscast tonight.

We're reporting another story that seems to defy the odds. It is the rescue of a 12-year old American girl stranded in the Panamanian jungle after the small plane she was on crashed killing everyone else on board. The victims include the Panamanian pilot, an American hedge fund manager and his teenage daughter who was a friend of the young survivor.

It's the day after Christmas, and most of us have yet to receive credit card bills reflecting our December spending. If the latest economic data holds true, however, Americans will sink deeper into credit card debt, while having a hard time paying their bills. Along with another alarming drop in home prices announced today, and anemic holiday retail sales numbers, experts tell us it deepens concern about the health of the economy as we head into 2008. We'll drill down deeper on these economic headlines on Nightly News tonight.

We will also show you the future of energy efficient driving. A car that goes one better than those popular hybrids, and will never require a trip to the gas station.

Finally an update on the Christmas night plans I wrote about on yesterday's blog. We decided not to try out the new chocolate fondue maker after all ( no angel food cake in the house) and instead went for a store-bought pumpkin pie, which was surprisingly tasty. And even after watching it year after year, I can say "A Christmas Story" still leaves my family chuckling at the words, "You'll shoot your eye out kid!"

I hope your Christmas was a good one too. Thanks for checking in. We'll look for you tonight on NBC Nightly News.

Lester ~ You are a great person to fill in for Brian while he is with his family.  We greatly enjoy your reporting ~ awesome job!  We thank  you for taking time out from YOUR family to keep us updated.
Tiger Story: You forgot to mention those idiots were trying to provoke the tiger. Why should the tiger be shot for being a tiger? This is what happens when human beings put wild animals on display for "entertainment"!
I just got done listening to your story about the Zoo mauling. I like the fact that you did a story on it, but what I don't like is the information that had been given earlier today that you DID NOT INCLUDE. I wouldn't be mad if it was some piece of information that did not matter. (Like the names if the people that got mauled.) But this is important. You failed to include that the Tiger had earlier, that same day been TAUNTED AND TEASED by the same three men that were killed and or mauled.

To me it is the men’s fault that they were hurt and or killed. Taunting and teasing an animal is completely childish and just plain wrong. People who do those types of things to animals have a power problem. They need to be in control and feel good about themselves and feel that they are powerful.

I would just appreciate it if you gave ALL the information next time, even if some people don't want to hear it.
Its a shame when a tiger mauls someone. Aweful tragedy. But we always kill the tiger (or bear) when they kill. We need to do the same to the animals that attack and kill our children. Like the murder that Killed Megan Kanka in New Jersey. Thanks to the Gov. of New Jersey, he will never see due justice...
Good Evening Mr.Holt, First of all I am glad you had a great and tasty pumpkin pie. Even though you didn't try out the chocolate fondue pot you can still have some angel food cake with chocolate fondue later in the week. Also I am happy you enjoyed the movie. Nice to know you had a wonderful Christmas. Our area received a very nice Christmas present on Christmas Day in the form of rain. It rained a good part of the day and more is expected Friday and Sunday. Maybe we won't end the year as the driest on record. I certainly hope not for our State. Now on to the broadcast. The report about the siberian tiger escaping from its enclosure at the San Francisco Zoo is terrible. So very sad that 17yr old was boy was killed and the other two men were injured. At least nobody else was hurt. I hope the two men who were injured recover. Hopefully they will find out why and how this could have possibly happened and prevent it from happening again. On another note concerning the report from Anne Thompson, I liked that electric car. Very sporty, but a little expensive. I suppose someday this kind of power for a car will be the norm. Time will tell. Finally, I enjoyed Michelle Kosinski's report from Brazil and the Amazon Rain Forest about the man teaching his art to young people. Those instruments made from scrap wood were really nice and sounded lovely. The young people are building a life and making something of themselves. Very hopeful and inspirational report. Thank you for the broadcast Mr.Holt. Your doing a fine job this week! Hope all the bloggers to the Daily Nightly had a really nice Christmas! Peace to all!
The tiger's escape is as haunting as the young survivor of the plane crash is inspiring. What a gift to her family. I would also like to compliment the use of mature women on this segment of Nightly News (Ann Thompson, Diane Olick, Lisa Myers) report. Thank you NBC and we need more of this.
Mr. Holt and NBC news team:  It is good to see you covering this week -- you don't get it off, but you do get more exposure.  Regarding tonight's (Wednesday's) broadcast, I would like to know if the instruments can be purchased to support the efforts of the teacher ansd students?
I have also observed that the reports you have been airing from South Africa were recorded some months ago.  While they remain topical, and appreciated, the delay since recording them makes their use in news programs suspect.
Keep up the good work.  Since this will be edited, I need to say I miss Campbell; your current weekend co-host just does not have the same chemistry.
It's a shame that we forget that wild animals are just that, wild.  Why do we expect them to act like our house cats?  I feel sympathy for the families of the young man killed and those that were attacked. If they were taunting and teasing the animal, did they not realize the result of the taunting, if not for themselves but a keeper or another person who might need to be in contact with that animal. What if there had been school children there? I hope that SF Zoo puts video cameras up so that people caught can be fined.
I TOTALLY AGREE WITH J Condren!!
Once again we are tragically reminded that wild animals are just that, wild. We always seem to be shocked and in varying degrees outraged, whenever another captive wild animal reacts with natural tendencies. The amount of news coverage this incident received speaks volumes about what we deem worthy of our attention. That same evening a woman was found mauled to death by dogs. I have yet to see more than a ten second spot concerning this. Though the attack was perpetrated by "domestic" animals, wasn't this incident as equally tragic?
I agree with Adrian.  What we fail to realize, is that animals are animals.  People have started treating pets as people, dressing them in clothes and trying to make them human.  We as people need to act responibly and approach with caution, even a family pet will bite.  We then blame the animal for being an animal.  We have covered the tiger attack nationally over and over, but we have children being abused by their own families and we see little of it.  We see what make a sensational headline.

SF Soo will probably be fined and sued.  I feel that the young men's fines for taunting and teasing and endangering zoo keepers and the public should offset the fines and the lawsuits.... but it happened in CA and apparently anything goes there.
