We get letters...

By Brian Williams, Anchor and managing editor

We're going to make full use of viewer mail tonight -- and we went through a mountain of it to air tonight's representative sample.  Our weeklong series generated the most interesting responses (I've read just about all of them) and we also plan to have some fun with other things people have written to us.

It has been a day of meetings here in New York -- I finally insisted on escaping the building (nowhere to go, just generically "out") and was able to walk exactly 3 blocks down 5th Avenue before the sheer crush of people became too much.  From November 1 to January 2, I do most of my walking in the street -- as many New Yorkers do -- as the sidewalks are jammed with visitors who, shall we say gently, don't walk at quite the same pace.

Back in the newsroom, we started carefully watching the hostage situation in New Hampshire...and news on a number of other fronts.

When we next see you on Monday, it will be from Seattle. In the meantime, have a great weekend, and please join us for tonight's broadcast.

It has been a rather full day - I hope you don't mention the Natalie Holloway.
Brian, when I finished my first of two years living and working in Moscow, one of my co-workers and I met a friend in New York City for a few days of "re-entry" back to the US.  The friend who met us was constantly yelling at us things like, "Slow DOWN!!  Why are you walking so fast?!"  Something about big-city life that you just don't understand until you live it.  So, for all those who may be planning a trip to NYC or any other truly big city in the world, please remember that it's actually more rude to hold things up than it is to push through.  It may seem like you're offending everyone around you, but trust me, they'll be singing your praises instead of secretly (or not) cursing you.
Interesting new Gallup poll about mental health and political parties. I think it's because we're less likely to trust the template stories from main stream media. :-)

You inform us that Evil Whoever died today but not how, which is particularly of interest since he's known for all of his defying death espectacles...
I am a young evangelical and am registered Independent.  I don't like the corruption and greed of the Republicans and am not happy with the Democrats ideas on moral issues.  I attend a "mega" church which has a youth style worship service--similiar to the one shown on your program.  The Brokaw report shows young Christians as abandoning traditional moral issues.  At our youth service, as well as others I have attended, the focus is God's love but ethics and moral are not swept under the rug.  As a historian (as well as a Christian), I would advise Mr. Brokaw to make his case with more sources than one church in North Carolina.
I was musing today about the uninsured and their terrible situation.  The truly indigent have Medicaid, the poorly employed have no insurance.  When a medical emergency occurs to the poorly employed they are saddled with a large bill they probably can't pay.  The result of non payment is a poor credit rating and dealing with collection efforts.

I'd like to see a study to see if my suppositions are correct, which I am afraid they are.

It's an unfair situation when the people who won't work get free health care and the one's who work at the quick stops and fast food restaurants, and are trying to support themselves, are held back because of a health condition.

I've fortunately never been in that situation, but I can certainly appreciate the frustration of those who are.
Thank you for the viewer mail segment on Nightly News, Friday November 30th .As I was watching Nightly News...really worrying about family, health issues, financial woes...your piece on viewer mail caught my attention. It was great...really interesting, informative and fun. It took my mind off my problems and onto something else.  Thank you for this most welcome moment.  Keep it up. It's nice to hear what others are seeing as well.
Good Evening Mr.Williams, First of all be careful walking around the streets of New York. There a many more people out there during the holidays and one can't always walk casually. Sometimes its safer in the newsroom. Now on to the broadcast. Nice to see Mr.Brokaw in the newsroom. Interesting segment about the evangelicals and their ideas. Certainly a different viewpoint and more technology involved in getting the message across. On another note I liked the viewer e-mail segment very humorous! The "Making a Difference" segment was so very inspirational. What a wonderful thing for that young teenager to do for those kids in Zambia. Building the high school and now he wants to build a hospital. I hope everything he does for them happens. It is great! Thank you for the broadcast Mr.Williams. (And I really don't think you need a mustache. You look fine without one. Except for the firefighter skit on SNL.) Have a great weekend! See you in Seattle on Monday. Peace to all!
please tell me how to financially support that young boy who has raised the money for the high school in Africa, that you reported on tonight in your "making a difference" segment.  That report made me cry.
Brian,
My family loves your evening news broadcast. I am so happy that you have stopped wearing stripped ties....but forget the polka dot tonight. Can't you wear something solid or patterned.
You may think this is crazy, but your tie takes up so much of the screen that it broadcasts a message. Stripped...negative. Polka dots...girly. Plain...mainly, in touch with his center. Patterned...diverse. Thanks so much and please don't think we are petty! Charlie Gibson never wears stripes and when he does his ratings go down. Your fans
Hugo Chavez makes proposals to change his country's constitution so he can be president for life and all Brian can say is that he's proposing changes.  Talk about MANAGING EDITOR.  Why waste time with the news, just run a half an hour of commercials.  It would be much more informative and I'm sure that considering NBC's ratings it could use the extra revenue.
Wonderful story about the young man who is MAKING A DIFFERENCE at 12 showing us how to do compassion!!  Thank you for sharing his GOOD news!!
Where could I make a contribution to his next effort?
Mr. Williams, I find it hard to follow you when you find the bigger news of the day and e-mails showcased to be about dropped luggage and cutting a turkey.  What about how the surge is working?  What about not perpetuating seperationist attitudes and advocating what we are doing right, at home and abroad? If you haven't noticed, people my age don't care about race anymore. And for those who do, they're archaic. I have always had respect for Tom Brokaw and have read his books as my grandfathers and great-uncles fought in WWII.  Some think that the yuppies of the day don't care about what is going on.. but there are some that were raised to care about the state of our country, raised to know what sacrifice means and raised to be proud of it.  Know, I am a 31 year-old female who has lost all respect for this newscast. It's a shame, through Mr. Brokaw's books and demeanor and both of your characters...I was hoping for better.  I was raised on NBC news from the time I was small, but no longer feel I am getting pertinent information or unbiased information.  I know I'm not the only one.  It's really just sad.

Not to worry.  New York is on my visit list--right behind Havana and Caracas.
Brian Williams,
The story by Tom Aspell 'Wave of Violence' Against Women  in Iraq ... makes me compelled to do something to help Hadil Sabbagh, Suhail and a another working woman Sharm (sp) mentioned  in Aspell's report. I am just an ordinary person. I have never done anything like this before but I must do something to help these women. If I could raise money who would I send it to? I would like the money to go for protection, health care, and education for these women.  I was so impressed with Hadil Sabbagh's bravery and courage.  Please show me how to help.  Also can I purchase a CD of this newsclip so I can show it to my friends to enlist their support?

Great show this evening and as always you made all the major points.  Now loved the comment by the Black man about this topic of Black Woman. My daughter and I watched this evening and she is still between both Hillary/Obama. You know I with Hillary. My son's shocked me as they said they will vote for Hillary. It is going to be close with Blacks voting for Hillary/Obama. On a side not Brian I think Oprah has lost touch with Black people, she's nice but she has moved on to the point she's out of the loop. Yes she might remember the way it was but she is clue less as to how it is now.

I think once the Church became part of the White House it's not about God anymore it's about money. Notice how all the Pastors are lining their pockets and committing sins.  This was done before as the bible tells it so it's nothing new.  I did like the young Pastors comments and I hope he continues serve God and stay out of politics.

I didn't catch the error of at the airport I just have a regular TV no TVO or what ever it's called.

I am glad the people at Hillary's campaign office got out safe. It's sad when a sick person has to frighten people to get attention.

Please stick to the news.
There's just 22 minutes.
I don't care whether or not you grow a mustache.
This is why I'm watching BBC world news more and NBC nightly new less.
Mr.Williams, When will NBC address the "fluctuating audio" issue of it's network feed? Every major cable and satelite provider in the U.S. is affected by this issue. It makes trying to watch not only the national news but "prime time" programming on NBC extremely annoying. Certainly SOMEONE in your engineering department must be aware of this problem. Millions of viewers would be more than happy to take up a collection if NBC executives are not willing to allocate the necessary funds to the engineeting department budget to correct this problem.
Mr. Williams:
I ask that you consider airing an indepth study on mental health in America.  You have done a wonderful job highlighting the needs of many other special needs groups, and especially in light of yesterday's Rochester NH incident, which has all the earmarks of mental health gone awry, may I suggest you check the website for both the National Alliance for Mental Health, and NARSAD, as well as candidate platforms on this pervasive health concern which afflicts, over the course of a lifetime ,one of every four citizens. Respectfully, Janet Dilts
Enjoy your new format, but one camera angle makes it look like you are interviewing friends from a prison. All that is necessary are the phones. What looks to be bars and the table are there.
Dear Mr. Williams,
I watch your news show most evenings.  Night after night you have discussed the many foreclosures occurring throughout the United States. Where do all of the people move to after their homes have been foreclosed?  I would appreciate a follow up news story regarding this topic. Thank you.
Respectfully,
Ellen Ferreira
Tom, will you do a nightly SPECIAL covering the adverse impact that the AMT(alternative minimum tax) will have on millions of unsuspecting tax payers when they sit down to do there 2007 tax returns? I have contacted my senators and congressman to no avail. It appears no one wants to discuss this subject much less do something about it.

The second subject that I would like addressed is when we turn 70 years old that we have to automatically withdraw all funds from IRA's and 401K's so that they can be taxed. People are living longer, and if the so called politicians are really concerned about the future funding of social security, a change in this rule would allow us ole folks to offset the social security problem.

Thanks for any assistance you can give us in these matters.
Brian: I watch you almost every night and you do a great job.  What I'd really to know is what it is like to have your job; Not only as anchor man but even before that.  Are you ever home or have quality time with your family?  For example, yesterday you wrapped it up telling us Lester Holt would be there over the weekend and you'd be in Seattle Monday.  So, you go home and maybe have Friday evening and maybe even Saturday but I would expect that the rest of the time you're preparing for Monday and travelling to the west coast or who-knows-where other times.  How do you handle that constant on-the-move life or, I should ask, how does your family handle it.

Just curious and a little sympathetic,

Ron Wapinski
Mr. Williams,

I am a 'news junkie' and have recently mmoved across the country from LA to the East Coast, after living in the UK for several years -- our TV is not set up yet and for three weeks I have been withour your nightly broadcasts. You are a consumate jornalist and broadcast reporter, equally comfortable 'in the field' and in the studio.  I was so pleased when you 'took the reins' from Tom Brokaw, another highly respected anchor.  Hopefully, I will get to see your broadcasts soon!  When I phoned NBC years ago about a story you had been so effectively reporting, your colleague in the office said you were a very fine man and thanked me for my comments.  I wish you anchors would have more 'say' and control over the stories you broadcast -- I am sure the news would be much different, if you did!!!
As I watched the "Good Samaritan, but not American" story on November 28, I could not help myself but became teary eye.  As a Mexican-American who came to the US 21 years ago I take this story very close to my heart.  My parents brought us to this country illegally (actually, we came into the country with a tourist visa, but became illegal after our visa expired)so I can never say I experienced what these immigrants do every time they try to enter the country illegally.  I am very satisfied that you showed to the rest of the country the "nice/good side" of illegal immigrants, many times the media only talks about the "negative" side of illegal immigrants in this country.  The majority of these illegal immigrants are fleeing their countries due to the lack of employment in their native countries; therefore, they must go where they can find a job to feed their families.  In many cases, 99.9% of these individuals come to the US looking for a job and in an attempt to accomplish the American dream, they do not come to this country with the intentions of hurting anyone.  It is such a cultural shock and it would be silly of me to expect anyone to understand what is like to move to a different country, with different customs and to learn a whole new different language, unless of course, you are an immigrant yourself and have walked in the footsteps of an illegal immigrant (sometimes working two to three jobs, just to make ends meet). Perhaps, I would have loved to see that the story ended in a whole different level, I am glad you are showing the rest of the world that illegal immigrants are just like everyone else, men and women, who are looking for an opportunity to a brighter future for themselves and their families.  Most importantly, many of them are willing to work for long hours and low pay for as long as it takes as long as they get to take care of their loved ones (many times, they would not even complain).  Many of us will be forever grateful that this country has allowed us the opportunities to better ourselves and to accomplish the American dream.  From a very grateful ex-illegal immigrant (became a US citizen in 1996).  I always knew that I would have to do my part and the only way for me to pay back to my new country would be to serve in the US Armed Forces.  Once again, thank you for sharing this story with the rest of America.

Kerry Sanders said on 12/02/2007 evening news: "There are no international observers here watching the election... none from any internationally recognized groups" yet the print version says: "About 100 electoral observers from 39 countries in Latin America, Europe and the United States were on hand, the electoral council said."

Which is it?

Looks like Kerry is carrying the Bush administration's propagandist line.
Americans were outraged at what happened to that girl in Saudi Arabia. She was arrested for being in a car with a male who was not a relative;then gang raped by the religeous police. If she becomes pregnant'she will of course have to be killed for bringing great shame upon the family.
On behalf of the American Mustache Institute, I would like to thank you for reading the letter about mustaches in society. Our organization has been encouraging our members to write you about this issue and we are honored you chose to read one of the emails.
We look forward to the day when a public figure like yourself will feel comfortable enough to sport a 'stache. In fact, in the video you ran, your mustache looked quite good. Your suggestion it might reappear is very encouraging to the mustached-Americans across the country.
Just remember, a mustache is a terrible thing to shave.
Dan Callahan, research director, American Mustache Institute
I enjoy your newscasts and would like to know what it would take to get a reporter to ask Huckabee the following question: "Why should a non Christian vote for you for President" - and have him take as long as he likes to respond. Thank yoU!
Who owns the big oil companies in this country.
Is it true that Citgo is owned by chavez.  It was my choice until hearing this statement.
I was raised in a mainstream protestant church and converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in my mid 30s. I would certainly like to know where the Southern Baptists and other charismatic fundamentalist faiths get their information that Mormons aren't "true Christians".  I have never felt closer to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ than I have since my conversion. I believe that every person has the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of his own conscience and that they should be allowed to worship how, where or what they may. I don't pretend to know exactly what a Southern Baptist, an Apostolic Penticost or any other fundamentalist faith might believe - and if I wanted to know I would ask one of them. I think these guys need to back off.  I take it very personally when they say that I am not a "true Christian".
I enjoy watching you on the nightly news.  It is always interesting and informitive.  I now that you try your best to get the facts right, but tonight I saw you report that the mormons have only five million members.  The fact is, there are more than thirteen milion.  I hope you will make the correction.
thank you
when did nora ever ask a serious question of senator clinton, give me a break!
Brian:

Thank you for your great news broadcast. I have one request, and that is for NBC to stop referring to any one presidential candidate as the 'front runner.' As Americans it truly saddens us that the media picks our presidential candidate way before the election. There are many candidates running for president who are never mentioned on your broadcast or by Tim Russert. Please give each candidate equal air time, or at the very least mention their name. Thank you.
Mr. Williams,
I have a problem that you may be able to help me with. My mother is 85 years old and is a devoted fan of yours, and watches you every night. She is very independent and lives alone. The problem is that she thinks you talk to her each night. She has even said she has to watch how she sits in front of the tv when she is in a dress. I have downloaded articles on tele-prompters to show her that you really aren't watching her. She says she believes me but things she says later don't indicate that. I would appreciate it if at the end of one of your broadcasts you could show your viewers a tele-prompter and explain that those of you in the news media can not see viewers at home. I'm sure there are other elderly viewers out there who might feel the same. Please don't read this on the air as it would embarass her, and put me in the doghouse. Any help you could give me on this would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Jim Livingston

Dear Mr. Williams,
Mr. Tom Brokaw is my favorite news journalist of all times.  I was pleased when you were named as his successor.  Like Mr. Borkaw, you also appear to present the news in an honest and engaging manner as you reveal passion and compassion toward the people and the stories you present.  My husband is a diehard Washington Redskins fan while I remain dedicated to the Dallas Cowboys.  I watched your broadcast from the beginning of the Sean Taylor unfortunate shooting to his death and his funeral with great anticipation to see how you would present this story.  To my dismay, I do not recall any mention of the Sean Taylor story on any of your newscasts.  I did turn briefly to CBS and ABC and noted that they carried the stories.  Is there a particular reason why you, as the NBC news anchor and managing editor of NBC Nightly News, chose not to run the stories? If I am in err, and you did present a story on Mr. Taylor, I extend my apology. While I await your reply, I commend you for the fantastic presentations on African American Women and the young teenager who raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for African youths.
Dear Voice of Doom (A.K.A. Brian Williams):
I think your doomsday newscast every night about the falling housing market has contributed towards the problem. Please let up.
You had a new plip on the telephone companies doing away with phonebooths tonight. I would like to know it was decided that poor people don't have a right to use a phone. I don't have a cell phone and never will. I know that there are others like me that can't afford one. I use pay phones and I shoud not be deprived just because I am poor. I can't afford TV chanels so I don't get to see all the shows everybody gets.  I live on $1000.00 a month and that does not go very far in rich america. I am sick of not being able to see and do all the things you rich people see and do because you have out priced the poor from your sight. You may not like it but we are here. There seems to be no middle class anymore
Please help me understand how nothing is being said about Obama and his not wearing the American flag on his lapel or not saying the Pledge of allegience ... He is running for president of our country and he doesn't even show any patronage to it....What religion is he??? Will the military have to all change their salute to Him?????Is our Flag that big a disgrace to him???   What is going on?????
RE: The decline of RV sales, and their mere 7 mpg fuel consumption. Please consider the lowly boating industry where a 21 foot boat may get 3 mpg, and boats in the 30 to 40 foot range are likely to get about 3/4 mpg on an economical 20 mph cruise or better yet burning 55 gallons an hour if you want to go fast (33mph). Also consider that fuel on the water is about 50 cents per gal more than on the highway. All things considered, this family pastime is quickly going by the wayside, and perhaps this indutry as well! It is quickly becoming only for the rich.
I am a stickler for the correct usage of the English language. Two of the most glaring errors by newscasters (including you)is the usage of more, or most importantly for what should be more, or most important. The assumption is that the phrase "More important" is a continuation of "What is most important". "Is" is a linking verb that requires an adjective for the predicate nominative. If you doubt me, google it. The second is the usage of "Who" for what should be "Whom." Whom should be used for the ojective of a sentence, even if it comes at the beginning, such as "Whom does this belong to, or after the prepositions to, for, from, etc. Please inform your news writers.
Astoundingly, the FDA fails to safeguard Americans from the largest  home-grown loophole yet -- Genetically Modified Foods (GMOs) . Once Americans realize how gullible and complacent we are, thinking our lawmakers, government and the FDA have taken the necessary steps to protect our food supply - we will demand GMOs be banned until safety tests PROVE they are safe.

Monsanto claims there has been sufficient safety testing on genetically modified (GM) foods. They failed to disclose that the person in charge of the FDA’s GMO policy was Monsanto’s former attorney, and later their vice president. The policy claimed that the agency is unaware of information showing that GM foods are substantially different. But documents made public from a lawsuit reveal that the overwhelming consensus among agency scientists was that GM foods could lead to allergies, toxins and new diseases. Evidence now shows their warnings to be valid.

The only human feeding study ever conducted found that genes inserted into GM crops transfer into the DNA of human gut bacteria, and remain functional. This means that long after you stop eating a GM food, you might still have its potentially dangerous GM protein produced inside your intestines. Analysis reveals that biotech companies meticulously design their superficial studies to circumvent finding these and most potential health problems.

Only the thundering clamor of wallets snapping shut will inspire US food producers to remove GM foods from stores the way they have in europe.

Hershey's and Mars have been vocal against in their opposition to GM sugar beets heading our way in 2008. Let's hope they hold their ground and keep their products non-GMO.

Brian, for 4 years we have been hearing about this war in Iraq etc.  Is it over, there hasn't been one word in over a week about our men and women over there.  Or all the horrible deaths.
Brian just a couple of thoughts.  Hillary is standing up like other candidates are yet it's called wrong. Haven't other Female President's stood up for their countries.  Why is it such a big deal here in the US when it's done by all male/female Presidents from all over the world.

Now I thought Bush's comments about the Russian election were funny.  Bush is telling Putin he thinks the election was fixed as Putin's party won by a land slide.  I guess Bush forgot Putin knows that Bush stole the first election and then fixed the voting machines to get the second term.  No wonder the World Leaders have moved on and left the US out.

I really feel bad for the fake news you are given by the White House to report.  First the lie about WMD's in Iraq now Iran.  I feel your pain.  I know you are only giving the news that given to you, but most of us look to you for the truth.  Just try saying the report from the White House then it's not yours but theirs.

Oh I emailed the Edward R. Murrow awards website and gave my two cents as to my support for you as the only I mean only evening news caster Americans can trust.  Keep you head up and don't trust anyone you just never know these days.
The news tonight bashing presidential canidate Huckabee was disgusting. Seems NBC could get a reporter that tells it like it is, like reporting the weather. Instead we get a woman who sounds angry and having a negaive contemptious tone in her voice. The story had nothing positive to report about the canidate, but only negatives. Had it been Democrat canidate the voice would not have had that snide, sarcastic tone.
Brian Williams,
Your story on how credit card companies are raising the interest rates on consumer's accounts struck a nerve with me.  I found out what I already had known for years -- that Bank of America and Discover have been robbing (fleecing?) the American public for years.  Last month I received a letter from Discover stating that my interest rate would change from 12% to 25% for no reason.  I was told that I could retain my 12% interest rate if I closed my account so that is exactly what I did.  I also closed my Bank of America account a few months ago for the same reason.

Brian - why is your photo taken every night?  The bright flash is noticable every night just as you sign off; tonight it even made you blink.  Just curious.
Brian:

Where do you get your neckties.   They are absolutely understated and classy.  I would love to know so I could get some for myself.  Love the show, try to watch it every night except during tax season.
