By Brian Williams, Anchor and managing editor

To paraphrase the old joke, if you looked up the word “multitasking” in the dictionary this week, you might very well find a picture of me there. A week this busy is fun and challenging, but fortunately, it’s also rare. Tuesday morning we drove down to Philadelphia to anchor Nightly News from there, and get into position to moderate the Democrats’ debate at Drexel University that night. My preparations for the debate had been underway for days, although the event itself seemed to go by in a flash. It ended a little after 11pm, and I was soon heading back up the New Jersey Turnpike to NBC headquarters in New York.

I got to 30 Rock at about 1am, and joined the Saturday Night Live writers for their all-night meeting (I don’t normally do this; perhaps I should add that I don’t normally host Saturday Night Live, which I am doing this Saturday). It’s been a long time since I’ve pulled an all-nighter, but the SNL gang hasn’t forgotten the rule we all learned in college for how to do it: consume mass quantities of snacks. To that end, dinner consisted of Tostitos and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups.

I should mention here that I have been a fan of Saturday Night Live ever since the show went on the air 32 years ago, back when I was still a teenager. I wrote in for tickets that first season, and got them for a show in the second season: episode #40, on March 19, 1977. The host that night was Broderick Crawford, a veteran movie and television actor best remembered for his starring role as Chief Dan Mathews in the 1950s TV series “Highway Patrol”. The musical guests that night? New Orleans’ own Dr. John and the Meters.

At the writers’ meeting, we read through draft scripts of about 30 potential sketches for the show. There’s a copy of each script for every participant in the meeting, which creates a blizzard of paper to go along with the aforementioned tidal wave of snacks. We began the process of sorting through the scripts, picking the funniest and most promising bits, and winnowing out the rest. Most of the scripts won’t make the cut, and the ones that do are reworked, rewritten, and sometimes re-thought. That editing process is still underway, and will continue right up until showtime Saturday night.

By the time I took my leave from the writers, the scripts and the snacks, it was almost 6am Wednesday. I stumbled off to get a few hours of sleep, then reported for duty at Nightly, where we had a full day of news to contend with, including fallout from the debate the night before. In the middle of all that, I dashed upstairs to the 6th floor here at 30 Rock to tape an appearance with Conan O’Brien, who was once a writer for Saturday Night Live. It was good to see Conan, and to deliver greetings from his absent bandleader Max Weinberg, currently on tour with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.

Today brought more preparation for Saturday’s show: a photo shoot, a promo shoot, rehearsals and camera blocking, some pre-taping, and -- as mentioned -- the ongoing process of editing and rewriting. Apart from that, I just taped an interview with Bono for a story we’re working on for tomorrow. I am sandwiching all this in (pardon the snack reference) between what remains my top priority: putting the Nightly broadcast together.

It’s all a lot to juggle, but as Hyman Roth says in Godfather II, this is the business we have chosen. I hope you can join us tonight.

Brian,

I always watch Nightly News whenever I can. I'll make sure to stay up late to watch you on SNL. I always knew you had a funny side. I get a glimpse of that now and then when you do the broadcast as well as a tender side, especially if it has something to do with pets and firemen. Good luck!
I had the great fortune (or at least I thought so) of seeing you perform the monologues at a late August UCB show whose title may not be appropriate for a network news blog.  You were absolutely hilarious, which I had no doubt you would be after your many appearances on Conan and elsewhere.  You also had good comedic chemistry with both Amy and Seth, so I hope you can use that well on Saturday.

With the writers' strike coming, your show will be the last one to air for (most likely) a very long time.  You're going to be a trivia answer someday: "Who hosted the last episode of the strike-shortened 33rd Saturday Night Live season?"

Maybe if you do well, they could just throw you out there every Saturday night for the next while with a few of your improv buddies on the show to just entertain the masses sans-writers!  (Or maybe you'd rather just have a normal week, with not so much multi-tasking.)
brian,
i am looking forward to your snl gig. i love to watch you on nightly news. it's like coming home. it's comfortable. you are professional, sincere and nice to look at and as a midwesterner i love seeing the new york sky line at the end of every brodcast. good lick saturday. remember if you mess up it only makes it funnier.
Brian,

Have fun on Saturday Night Live....You will be great!  Any chance Bono/U2 will be your musical guest?
Congrats on the SNL host gig. Another big step from
my home station KOAM-TV Pittsburg, Kansas
Brian...
Think about it. Would Cronkite have hosted a comedy show? What in the world does this do to the credability of Nightly? Are things really that bad?
As your former producer, I am-- quite frankly -- worried.  Pete Hively-- NBC News retired.
Brian you are the man .... enjoy yourself
Dear Brian,

You may have interviewed presidents and royalty, but you know you've really made it when you've hosted Saturday Night Live!!!

Edwin Newman hosted the show too and I've always respected him as a trusted newscaster after it was all over!!

Go break a leg and I hope you're the one who gets to yell, "LIVE FROM NEW YORK, IT'S SATURDAY NIGHT!!!"

Have a good time at it!!!  I'll be watching, too.
Have to wonder if there is any chance SNL could talk Tom Brokaw, Tim Russert or another news celebrity into doing the same thing - Brian, I am anxious to see you do a different SPIN on the show - I'm sure it will be very funny!
Dear Brian

Thank you for all your coverage of all the late and breaking news. I am a soldier located in Iraq, I've been deployed for the past year with approximately 90 days left to complete our 15 month tour. I don't get much an of an opportunity to watch television here, so I hope I'm not over-stepping my boundaries as I am repectfully requesting a copy of this SNL episode, or at a minimum your performance on the SNL episode. Thank you for all your support, good luck, and God bless.
Wow. Now I think you are bragging a bit, but so what you deserve it.  You are the man!  You are going to kill on SNL I know it!
Brian, I just read the entire SNL thread. I seldom watch SNL anymore, but I will certainly not miss it tonight. Your appearance will no doubt be a huge ratings boost. I've been a huge fan of yours since you filled the huge shoes Tom Brokaw left under the Nightly desk. Once again, I'm happy to say you have "outdone yourself" filling Tom's shoes. I've been totally amazed at everything I've seen you do.
I majored in broadcasting at Iowa State Univerisity
and worked at WOI TV in the early sixties, so I still love live TV. Break a leg tonight!

Have you been invited to make a cameo appearance on Las Vegas with Tom Selleck?

Hi Brian,
I will see to it that I would be on the front seat tonight.  I always enjoy watching you on your Nightly; I'd say SNL is breather for you.  Enjoy and have fun, altogether now!
WOW! You are the man! I got tired just reading about your week.
I know you're probably nervous about SNL so just a few words of advise.  Be careful with the snacks.  Some people say they throw-up before their performances.  This would not be pretty especially on those nice suits you wear.
I don't want to make you more nervous but I know I'll be one of millions watching.
Good Luck!!
What's going on here? Everyone has such nice things to say about this Brian Wilson guy.Could this really be happenning- people saying nice things out of sicerity? Darn it! Now I'm going to have to look for another blogsphere to get my daily ration of ill-tempered, non-educated verbal rot! Thanks for making me read through all of those nice comments above, now I'll probably wind up being nice to people today. Gee Mr. Wilson, I hope you have a wonderful and fun filled evening in NY. I'll be in NJ waiting for you on NBC! I'll be sure to get in a good nap for you!
Oh man, there I go being nice...I gotta go...
I meant Williams, not Wilson. Wilson is the volleyball with bad hair that was lost at sea
Brian,

Wow! It's great that you are hosting SNL! I admire your poise and the passion you have for news broadcasting.

I am a senior at Loch Raven High School and I am news editor of my school's newspaper REVELATION. I want to major in Broadcast Journalism and become a news anchor.

I'll definitely watch you on SNL and, who knows, you might take over Conan's spot as Leno's replacement. I kid, of course. Conan has a lot more comedic history than you do, I think.

One thing is for sure: No one can beat your skills when it comes to news broadcasting!
Pete Hively (your former producer) should keep his thoughts to himself.  He sounds negative to me, which is probably why he's not your producer anymore.  At any rate I wish you the best as SNL Host.
Uh, Lynn G., it is YOU who needs to learn the difference between "your" and "you're" ..... also, the period goes inside the quotation mark at the end of a sentence.
Brian, Your the Man!!!!! Nice Job!
Seems since your news Ratings have slipped you are resorting to help from a comedy show.  Thought that was what you were anchoring all this time
Brian:  Great "Making a Difference" piece with Bono re: year 1 success of the "RED" campaign (Friday's broadcast);  also Bono's "Thank You" online video piece is a great testament to the contribution that NBC Nightly News and it's viewers have made to the fight against world poverty.  Keep up the great work!
Brian,
Good luck! I can't wait to watch SNL tonite, and I'm sure you'll do great! We love watching you every evening when we are eating dinner; you're so good at what you do.
Brian,

BRAVO!! You are making SNL history as the VERY FIRST reporter to host Saturday Night Live. Do you think it is possible that maybe you can pitch a idea to have Chris Hansen to do the show as well?! Just the thought! I salute you!!
I think that you are going to be an amazing host on SNL.  You have an easy air about you that makes us enjoy watching and listening to you. Peace , love and saturday night!  I'll be there!
I rarely miss the nitely news. You seem to be a lot more human than the others. I'll have to stay up to watch you tonight to see yet another side of you. It's past my bedtime but I happen to have a supply of peanut butter cups at the ready.
Brian , you are my hero, you can be serios and brave going to dangerous places, but you come accross so honest and sincere,we wpouldnt miss one night of you news broadcast so doing snl will be a piece of cake for you because we saw you on Lenos show and you were great, yuor a fine man.

g
Brian,
Years back I saw you subbing in at The Today Show. You were totally hilarious that week.I always thought that you should show more of your comedic side. You are great. Also, the bits you do on the Conan O'brian show with Conan are terrific. It just make you that much more wonderful that you don't take yourself too seriously.Keep up the great job on NBC news.I always watch. You are indeed a class act! Carrie.
Brian, the show is great. I am glad to see the genuine humor in your acting!
This is all calculated. It's a cynical ploy to get the SNL Weekend Report gig. Duh.
hot diggity dog!!! brian, you were fantastic on SNL tonight... seriously, I feel that it was EASILY the best episode of the season.

great job.

Finally... I found something funnier than Celebrity Jeopardy! Thanks a lot Brian, I really enjoyed your performance, and I wish I had you as a principal in high school. You rock!
Mr. Brian Williams,
A friend of mine needs your advice on one of the type of investigative reports that you have done on TV.  It has to do with someone in a foreign government (supposedly) needing help in doing business here in the states and wanting someone for a go between and suckering them for money.  My friend is a Filipino lady who came to me prior to getting totally hooked up with these people and I tried my best to convenience her to run from these people.  Needless she did not take my advice and let them hook her.  They sent her money orders and I believe checks as well.  She took these items and opened a bank account but luckily did not send them any money yet.  She deposited two money orders for $825 each or $1,650 total and was waiting for the money to clear before sending these individuals any money.  Now they are pressuring her and the bank is also stating that she owes them more than $500 fee on this money that is not even really there.  She was initially contacted through her email address but now is getting phone calls from these people (naturally they have their phone number blocked so that she can not call them back) and from the bank as well.  Luckily she has copies of the emails that she received from them or at least some of the emails.  She no longer has a computer that works and has come to me again for my help.  My advice to her is to run as quickly as she can to the police and give them copies of everything and tell them her complete story and then do the same with her bank and see what happens from there.
Do you have any further advice or help that we might give her?
Please contact me for now but if you need her name, phone number or any of that information I can supply it to you as I am sure she will be more than willing to tell you her story directly.  My phone numbers are Home:  (727) 812-5498 / cell:  (727) 204-1901
In a very long span of "so-so" SNL's, I was thrilled that your stint was funny all the way through!  You did a GREAT job and I enjoyed watching very much!  Perhaps you missed your true calling?!
Brian, Who would have thought with those melancholy eyebrows that you would be absolutely hysterical on SNL last night! You were a natural and, quite honestly, made those skits as funny as they could have been. I'd love to see you up there again.
Hope your leg heals from the break!!
Last nights SNL was the best...Brian you were great!
I always watch you on the Nightly News and when I heard you were doing Saturday Night Live, I was so excited. I'm 19 and I've been watching SNL since I can remember and this is the most excited I've gotten for a host. You are a perfect example of how reporters should be, serious and down to earth at the same time. You were hilarious on Saturday Night Live and all should be forgiven by Monday. :)
brian you were by far the best host snl has had in a long time..i've never laughed so hard  as i did sat. night..i really loved the digital short  on what your day consists of especially the morning duo...hope you come back soon..nightly news will never be the same....
Brian-I just finished watching SNL on Tivo. You were brilliant!
ed koch ddid it...bob dole did it...edwin newman ddid it!dont let the tight-assed talking heads get to you!laughter sshows humanity.and .....your very good!!!
ed koch ddid it...bob dole did it...edwin newman ddid it!dont let the tight-assed talking heads get to you!laughter sshows humanity.and .....your very good!!!
Hi Brian,
As promised, I was at the front seat so excited about your stint.  There was that 'stiffness' but was alright!  I couldn't believe you could be funny too!!YOU DELIVERED!!!!!! I hope to see more of the light side of you; you should do this once in a while especially after those 'heavies' in your Nightly.  KUDOS!!!!!! and more power to NBC4!!!
You were great on SNL!!!!  I especially loved the fireman bit.  You are funny!  Hope you do it again.
Brian,
I am 22 and never cared for the typically dry business of nightly news shows.  In fact I had increasingly come to think that perhaps you were physically incapable of cracking a smile. However, after seeing you display this other side of you I have happily been proven wrong.  I think it's great you were so willing to joke about yourself and let people see your more human side. You're right when you said people should be able to understand that Saturday is your night off and your performance on SNL in no way takes away from your obvious ability to be professional.  GREAT job last night. That was without a doubt the funniest episode of SNL I have ever seen....And now I think you've gained a new viewer to Nightly News.  Encore!
Brian,

From KOAM-TV In Pittsburg, KS. to SNL? Talk about the big time :). A suggestion. Keep the Bond opening for your newscast. WAY classier than CBS or ABC.
Hey, Brian, your SNL will be considered one of their CLASSIC episodes for  years to come! Your performances were excellent! Congratulations!
I love you... Your look, your voice, your class and your sense of humor.
Great job on SNL!!!
I have always enjoyed watching you on the news ever since you were sitting in for Tom Brokaw.  I felt like I was on the TV and when it was made official and became the NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams that really made my day.  So when I saw you on SNL on Saturday, and you were funny, really funny, it was like that first time I saw you on the news.  Thanks for the ride.
Watching a Internation News Icon such as Brian Williams is great but watching Brian Williams run for President of the United States is greater.
