Good afternoon from New York. General David Petraeus, who emerged relatively unscathed from the political battles in Washington over war policy, is back on a more familiar battlefield. In an NBC News television exclusive, our Richard Engel will report tonight on his tour of a Baghdad neighborhood with the General, who underscoring his testimony to Congress, showed Richard what he says are concrete signs the security situation is improving.

From Afghanistan we will report on President Hamid Karzai's offer to the Taliban amid continuing violence there.

From Asia, NBC's Ian Williams is reporting calm on the streets of Yangon, Myanmar after days of clashes between government troops and protesters. He'll also report on government efforts there to quash Internet and phone communications regarding the situation.

In politics, we will report why former Speaker of the House of Representatives Newt Gingrich will not run for the Republican nomination for President.

Tonight we will also preview Supreme Court justice Clarence Thomas's soon to be released memoir in which he break his silence about the sexual harassment allegation that almost derailed his confirmation to the court.  We will also hear some of what Thomas's accuser Anita Hill told me in a recent interview.

Plus, we wrap-up our series "Thirsty Planet" with a look at how Israel has successfully harnessed sea water as a source of clean drinking water.

Thank you for clicking on to see what we're up to. I hope you can join us tonight for NBC Nightly News.

Good Evening Mr.Holt, Always great to see Richard on the broadcast!! His reports are always fine and informative. Seeing Richard walking with General Petraeus amongst the markets and talking with vendors it shows some reduction in the violence. As Richard stated there has been a relaxing in curfews, but of coarse the problem is not solved. The General said he did share the frustration over the war, but is looking forward. This is going to take some time and some troops will be in the region for a long time. As you stated to Richard he has been busy covering the Blackwater incident and this in really not General Petraeus's issue, yet as Richard said they are investigating the incident. I hope that justice is served in the matter. Another fine and excellent report by Richard as always!! Thank you for the broadcast Mr.Holt. I always enjoy clicking on to the blog posting Mr.Holt! Always stay safe Richard!! Peace to all!
Regarding your series thirsty planet I have to ask why every news show has to have news on Israel?

You do know the reason they can afford desalination is because of billions of dollars in US aid, more than any other nation on earth!

Just so you know, Israel is NOT a US State!

Second of all, Jews are only 1% of the american population yet from the experts and news stories one would think they were 50%.  I dont see the same representation of stories for say african americans, hispanics, asians, christians, etc.  Are you sending the message that jews are more important than other groups or that they have a disproportionate control of the news?

You do know about the power of the Jewish & Israeli lobby?

You do know it was Israel that wanted us in Iraq and Afghanistan and made us a target for 911 because of our disproportionate support for Israel.

You do know it was Natan Sharanski, an Israeli, that talked Bush into trying to democratize the middle east.

You do remember Julius & Ethel Rosenberg, Pollard, Franklin and other Israeli spies?

and yet everyday there is atleast 1 story on Israel?

Why?
Lester
I'm an African American I a truly ashamed of Clarence Thomas and it's a disgrace to the many people of all colors who died for American Freedom as Americans.  Thomas has done nothing but do as he told by the people who appointed him. God will be Mr. Thomas's Judge and may God have mercy on his soul for the things he's done to hurt minorities. No I wont be buying his book either.

As for Iraq and General Petraeus and his walk like things are great well I noticed the protection he had and I'm sure we got the famous planned viewing as Bush always makes sure the even is with friends and supporters.  Petraeus did a good job strolling down the street with a helmet and talking to Richard.  We've gotten use to the planned performance for the media to show the public. As for the weapons that Iran is giving Iran you forgot to mention that the US and the Saudis are supplying weapons too. We need honest answers not lies. Later we've heard the media report our troops killed an Al Qaeda leader but it was reported two years ago that he was killed.  I hope this isn't another fake story like the video of the fake Osama who seem to get shorter, fatter, fake beard, wider shoulders and distraught face.

Iran calling the CIA terrorist is interesting. Most of the US CIA agents resigned after the White House leaked covert agent CIA officer Plames name.  I noticed an ad on TV for CIA agents it's that bad. I saw a show on PBS with ex CIA agents who said they felt their names could be leaked for political reasons so they resign. It was like an exodus at the CIA and nothing will change until we get a new President.
Dear Mr.Holt, Always great to see Richard on the broadcast! His reporting is so fine and informative. Seeing him walking amongst the markets in Baghdad with General Petraeus showed how there has been a reduction in violence, yet there was still violence outside that area. The General did say he understood the frustration of the American people, yet there will be some troops in the region for a long time. Iran always seems to be a large threat to that country and it will also for a long time. You did say Richard has been busy covering the Blackwater incident and he has been doing a wonderful job. I can agree with him that he said the situation is more for the State Department that the military, but they were looking into the investigation. Also the "Thirsty Planet" report by Mr.Fletcher was very interesting. I think Israel found a good idea by tapping the sea and making it drinking water. Even Mr.Fletcher like the water's taste. Anyway, thank you for the broadcast Mr.Holt. Always stay safe Richard!! Peace to all!
