In the courtroom, Michael Vick looked lost

Reporters, spectators, and courtroom sketch artists begin arriving at 4 a.m. to get in line for one of the 100 coveted courtroom seats for Michael Vick's plea hearing at 10:30 am.

By the time I arrive at 6:30, 30 people are already ahead of me along the side of the federal courthouse in Richmond. About two dozen television satellite trucks are parked behind the courthouse for liveshots. PETA protestors begin congregating across Main Street from the front of the courthouse to howl at Vick when he arrives to plead guilty to the dog fighting charges.

At 9:50 a.m., we begin filling into courtroom 339, an ornate, dark-paneled chamber. Vick and his lawyer Billy Martin arrive at 10:25. The room hushes. Dressed in dark grey suit, white shirt, and yellow tie, Vick looked nervous.

Three minutes later, Judge Henry Hudson enters. He's bald, regal looking. He gets right down to business. The Richmond court is known as "rocket docket" for good reason. He goes through charges against Vick. Vick, standing and flanked by lawyers, answers "Yes, sir" or "No, sir" in low tone to judge's questions. He formally pleads guilty to dog fighting conspiracy charge. Hudson says he's not bound by the recommended 12-18 month prison sentence.

"You will have to live with what I decide," he tells Vick. Judge Hudson sets sentencing for 10 a.m., Dec. 10. It was only 18 minutes from beginning to end.

Afterwards, Vick looked lost in courtroom. He stands, sits, stands again. He turns to family members sitting right behind him. Press people are escorted out of courtroom.

Outside, PETA protestors still massed across street. One placard reads, "All Dogs Go To Heaven. Will Michael Vick?"

Billy Martin speaks briefly to cameras behind courthouse. Says he hopes Judge Hudson saw the real Michael Vick and will "get it right" on Dec. 10.

Half an hour later, Vick himself steps before the cameras at nearby Omni Hotel. It was hard to hear over clicking still cameras. He gave a complete mea culpa. He says he's ashamed and  disappointed in himself. He apologizes to young kids for his "immature acts" and says he needs to grow up. He takes full responsibility and cites bad judgment. He calls dog fighting a "terrible thing" and asks for forgiveness.

He says he's turning himself over to God and walks off stage without taking questions.

I am a black woman living in Atlanta. I was a Michael Vick fan. He brought excitement to a boring Falcons team. I am no longer a Vick fan, but I will continue to support the Falcons team. What Michael Vick did was disgusting and immoral. Hopefully his statement wasn't just words because he got caught; I hope he means what he said and really will reflect on his poor behavior and will turn himself around. I doubt he will ever play pro football again, so I really hope he can discover a new life purpose. I will pray for him.
I am at a loss to understand why the media has given all this attention to Michael Vick who has, by his actions, proven what a low-life he really is.  I am so disgusted by the behavior of some professional athletes who are paid ridiculous amounts of money to behave like spoiled children with no regard for anyone but themselves.  Seems to me our priorities are all mixed up when we can't pay our teachers a wage that befits the dignity of their work.  What kind of human being has no regard for animals?    It's a good thing Vick has turned his life over to God, because I know God has more compassion for the likes of him than I.
Did Michael Vick think dogfighting was a "terrible thing" in July when his lawyers read a statement saying that he would clear his "good name?"  Amazing how quickly he saw the light once his buddies turned on him and changed their pleas.  I for one couldn't care less what Michael Vick says.  He's guilty, he's only remorseful that he was caught (it's obvious that he truly does not get what's so wrong about fighting dogs - they guy is clueless), and whether he rats out other criminals or not, he's still going to jail -- exactly where he belongs
I believe this was sincere, and was the best statement Michael could have made.  Perhaps statements such as this by our idols might move our children's culture in a positive direction.  Surely something is needed.
I can't defend Mike for what he did.  I never thought he  was great QB but that aside, I do hope that after he serves his time he can re-enter society and be productive at what ever he chooses.  My greatest fear is that Mike will completely cocoon himself from the world upon his release, neither trusting friends nor family which usually leads to depression and suicide.  No matter what people think of him, Mike is still a human being and while he did something despicable to animals is not one himself.  Since we all live in glass houses I hope the stone throwing will be at a minimal.

Part of me would like to hope that this is simply a case of a young man who couldn't handle the fame that his talent brought him, but then I realize that no matter what, there is no justification for abusing another life - whether that life is on 2 legs or 4.  I hope that Mr. Vick learns his lesson from this; his family is there to support him regardless; and he can come from this a changed man.  I also hope that his future in the NFL is gone - our children deserve better role models than him.
He's ashamed and sad that he got caught.  Good riddance!
Never fails that people turn themselves over to God when they get caught. The Jailer got first crack at him then its Gods turn.
I question how sorry he really is. A lot is at stake for him. Rich versus poor. Is he sorry for what he did  or is he really sorry he got caught.
Shame he did not find Jesus before he brutally tortured those animals.  To quote the Church Lady -'How convienient'.
I am so against what Michael did.  I have been adamant that he should not be allowed to return to the NFL.  After, his words, I felt sorry for him.  What a waste.  I am not angry anymore.  I hope being a NFL quarterback isn't the only thng he has talent for.  I seriously doubt the NFL is likely to let Vick tarnish their reputation.
I find it impossible to feel sorry for Michael Vick.  It is just as difficult for me to trust in the sincerity of his statement today.  People who realize they are going down the wrong paths and decide to change their ways don't usually have to be handed a federal indictment in order to see the light. I don't understand how someone could risk so much in order to do something as heinous as dogfighting.  I can't condone it and I am glad that law enforcement is beginning to understand its seriousness.  I only wish that Michael Vick could have turned to God before so many dogs were mistreated and brutally killed.
There is no one amongst us that has not done something we have regretted.  Michael Vick is no different.  What he did was shameful, but throwing stones at him does not help the situation.  Instead why not volunteer at the ASPCA's around the country or donate to the organizations that rehabilitate abused animals.  Don't forget what he did, but use it for reforming not condeming.
I have forgiven Michael Vick and have forgotten.  Yes, what has transpired in this young man's chapter in life is tragic, but somehow America must understand that we serve a loving and forgiving God.
Let me get this straight; We make our potential Presidential Canidates answer questions about their hunting skills (killing skills), we pay top dollar to go on controlled hunts of helpless animals, yet we want to ruin this man over pitting two vicious animals against each other in what they are trained to do, fight! Someone please explain to me why hunting is good for our society. I realize dogfighting is horrible, but to me, it is no different than stalking and shooting helpless animals.
i dont feel he is really sorry for he did .he has his life but the dogs dont .i dont feel sorry for him.he should get at least 40 years for the sake of the dogs .thank you
I understand what Vick did was cruel and heartless, but I don't care what the judge gives him.  We all make mistakes throughout life.  We should not judge anybody.  I'll still be a fan.  Anybody that eats meat should be considered a animal killer.  It's just ashame that we're more concerned about dogs then we are family and friends dieing in Iraq everyday.  Somebody needs to get Bush in a Federal court with over 3000 counts of murder.
Vick is just what he is-an animal abuser of the worst ilk:PURPOSEFULLY. He's either a sociopath or totally morally bankrucpt.  Either way, he must be punished.  I have no idea if his plea is sincere, but isn't it amazing that so many people caught in the act of some heinous crime suddently find Jesus? Well, Mr. Vick, I have only one thing to say to that & it's my husband's all-time favorite bumper sticker: JESUS IS COMING............& BOY IS HE PISSED!
I really liked his tone, however the reference to finding Jesus sorta irked me, with that said I am ashamed and disappointed in the way this was perceived from the outset. I have Kids and sports figures cannot be their role model, I am and regardless of how famous someone is my kids will always look up to me first. For all those who put references in here to their kids using these flawed individuals as role models, better take the parenting class 101. love, honor and respect breeds decency not hero worship. I forgive Micheal Vick, but I do not forgive ignorance
I CANT WAIT TO SEE HIM BACK IN THE NFL.
HATERS!
It is sad that so many dogs had to suffer at the expense of these people. Althugh I hope and Pray that Mike Vick gets the Max sentence, the only good thing to come out of this, is that more people are aware of this cruelty. I agree with the above posts that in the end, they all turn to God. It is just crazy that they never turned to God in the first place, but decided to torture his beautiful creatures.
Hopefully he will look back in five or ten years and realize that this is the best thing that ever happened to him. He made a mistake, a horrible mistake, let him pay the price and get on with it. I think the judge will give him 18 months (which he deserves) and 5 years probation. He'll be playing for the Raiders in 3 years!
I love Micheal Vick. He a great footbal player and I truly feel that he was set up.

Keep your head up Mike, shake it off and remenber that the demons is out there.

I hope that he can continue his football career against all odds.
First off, what he did was not right. But I want a positive outcome to this negative event. I see no value of incarcerating Mr Vick. I do see value in fining him the maximum amount, asking him to donate one million to humane society coffers, serve alot of community service in the fight against animal cruelty, and of course get counseling to help him with his life. And all this at his expense.

I do want him to be allowed to play in the NFL, including this season. It his status as a football player which will enable more good than bad to be  born from the despicable situation that we are witnessing in the media.

I want to see the NFL let him play and I want him to rise to being a better man and use his status as a major influence to let others learn from his mistakes. I want to reap the advantage of seeing him succeed with life and make a major contribution to changing others minds with regard to our animal population.

Of course all of this would be under supervision of the NFL and his probation officers. If we handle this properly everyone can be proud of a bad thing gone good. If not, then he can be remanded back to the courts, serve his time, never play football again in the USA, and we can all lose.

Remember this young man is only 27 and if we can all reap from his moral improvement then I say we need to take the chance. He has faced the darkness and we have the ability to guide him to the light for which I think he will be eternally greatful. And remember if it wasn't Michael Vick this wouldn't be the story it has become.
Are we any different. We have the right to critisize, judge, pre judge, be hateful, say mean and nasty things, wish death, wish bad and evil things on others, hate, attack others with words. How can we say we are for righteous and all good things and say and do the things we do. What ever Mike Vick says, some of us self righteous people on this board will never forgive, either it is too much, not enough, fake, sincere, we just can't get enough.  Whats done is done, we cant change the outcome, and Mike Vick will soon do his time. But are we any different, yeah we havn't killed any dogs, but in some we are just as mean spirited as he is.  Lets look at our self and ask ourself  ARE WE PERFECT.
In my opinion what Vick did was not "immature."  What he and his associates did was firstly cruel, secondly ILLEGAL!  Immature is something a child might do as a result of inexperience due to age.  That doesn't qualify here.
Mike Vick did a terrible thing, however if he does his time and shows contrition (by future actions) then he should be allowed to make a living at his craft, afterall if child molesters and rapist can 2nd chances why cant he?
WE WANT MICHAEL, WE WANT MICHAEL.
VICK that it.
Leave Michael Vick alone.
How stupid can people be. we are talking about a man life and career.

I have seen dogs get hit by  cars, but do they charge the driver? Hell no.
Turning to God is the best thing.  Only God can forgive, but people are harder to please than God.  People put a little love in your hearts.
What Michael Vick got involved in is despicable.  But I think Michael is basically a good human and he deserves to be able to pay for his errors, after which he should be able to resume pursuing his livlihood in football.  He may not be a "star" or have endorsements, but he deserves to earn his living in football and to play for the love of the game.
Lets take to court and charge all farmers.
They are killing animals. Maybe Michael Vick should have told them he was a farmer. dead animal, no problem.
Michael Vick should be banned by the NFL, all records removed.
I don't get how people can feel Vick was setup or targeted.  He was the 'heavy' in a gambling ring that included dog fighting, but extended into inhumane treatment.

People need to wake up.

That being said, we all deserve a chance to get it right, but not before paying for what has been done.  In a couple of years, maybe he'll get back on the field and excel, but it will be a tough PR move.
he reminds me of a former president---i smoke the drugs just did not enhale
People seem to be forgetting one thing about Michael Vick. He bold faced lied to Mr.Goodell and to the owners of the Falcons. Vick also lied to the average person saying that he will clear his good name. Mr. Goodell and the Falcon owners seemed to have learned pretty quick and will not listen to what is being said by Vick. But after reading other comments some people will still beleive what Vick says. Personally his actions were not immature, a mistake or bad judgment by a 27 year old rich athlete it was pure sutpidity on Vicks' part. No matter what he does and says. The NFL did what was right and hand down an indefinite suspension with out pay and the Falcons have every right to cut ties with him and go after money that was paid in good faith. Lets just hope that these millionare athletes watch and learn from this and start acting like the professionals that they are.
First of all, let’s get this out of the way…there’s no defending what Mike Vick was accused of doing to those dogs.  With that being said, if he is sincerely sorry and apologetic for what he’s done, then I say he should be given a chance to redeem himself and become a part of our society again.   No doubt, he’s going to spend some time incarcerated so he will have plenty of time to re-evaluate his life and hopefully make better choices after he has served his time.  The problem that I have with all of this is the hypocritical beliefs that I’m reading on a lot of posts.  Just because hunting has been deemed ‘legal’ does not make it acceptable to kill innocent animals.  Much like it is unacceptable to train dogs to fight to the death, there is no rationale way that people can honestly believe that its acceptable for a ‘hunter’ to blow a 5 inch hole in the side of a deer, or riddle a defenseless bird with buckshot just for the sheer pleasure in it.  Like it or not, after the man serves his sentence, he’s going to be given another chance…by some billionaire owner…to play football…again!  Professional sports is a $ BILLION $ business and while the huge endorsement deals from Nike, etc. will no longer be possible, he will play football in some capacity (receiver, punt returner, etc.) again because some billionaire owner will see the opportunity to cash in on him.  Watch and see…
"he who has no sin, let him cast the first stone".........
Ron C, I agree with you.  I was never a Vick fan and I don't think what he did was right, but like you said I still don't like the way he is been judge and bush get away with people been killed evryday because he stared a war on a lie.  It just gose to show you that people care more about an animal life then they do humans.  That is sad! I will say that after Vick so his time he should be able to play if he still can.
How many of us have made a bad decision or the wrong choice. Michael Vick made a bad decision and he should not have to pay for this for bad decision for the rest of his life.
"He who is without sin, cast the first stone".
Next;

1) Judge gives him three years not the six months he's expecting.

2) Trys to take off for Mexico, gets caught, and gets another five years.

3) Serves his eight years, gets out, hooks up with Marcus and they rob a liquor store, and he shoots the owner.

4)Gets thirty years, and is released in 2045.
Michael Vick is a person and noone is perfect. I believe he is sorry for what he did. Its like anyone who does something wrong, they may not realize how wrong it was at that time but when they get caught or something bad happens, they realize how wrong they were. Getting caught is what helps anyone realize the seriousness of any crime. Does a drunk cocaine addicted celebrity feel bad for driving under the influence? Prob not until the police pull them over. Thats anyone and any wrong thing anyone has done. Your little child may not feel bad about stealing a cookie from the cookie jar until Mommy catches him and scolds. Let him redeem himself in society. I hope Vick plays again.
I disagree with all the talk about him "making a bad decision".  He did not merely make a mistake.  This went on for at least six years.  That is a lifestyle, not a mistake.

And any comparison to hunting is based upon a faulty argument.  I don't agree with hunting personally, but it is not ILLEGAL.  And, to my knowledge, hunters don't kill their prey by means of hanging, drowning, or electrocution. Also, did Michael Vick eat any of the dogs he killed?  I don't think so.
"Mistakes were made" Sound familiar? How about "what I did was wrong, cruel, and inhumane?"

Michael Vick can redeem himself  by devoting his life and resources to compassionate treatment of animals. How about some personal time and resources given to the Humane Society? Everyone can change and find redemption if they seek it enough.
There are many programs of young offenders working with dogs that helps them develop a sense of responsibility and care towards others, while they experience the warmth and bonding with a dog adopted from a shelter, preparing the dog to be adopted by a family. There is a program in Oregon at the state youth correctional facility. It's called Project Pooch. There is zero recidivism for these young men. Take this experience to bring hope, Michael. Michael Vick, give your time and money to someting like this! www.pooch.org
Let's not forget what Michael Vick has done.  This is not a stupid man and he was very much aware of what he needed to say to save his own skin.  Sincere?  No...nothing more than a stab at survival.  The only reason this man is sorry is because he got caught.  Would he have stopped this whole situation if no one had found out...I doubt it.  Killing animals for the fun of it....watching animals kill each other for the fun of it and betting on it to boot regardless of what he says.  This man is cruel and his actions prove it.  Five years should be his sentence....the dogs, what sentence do they face.  Death.  They never had a chance.  And as for him finding God...he laughed in God's face for how many years?  These animals were God's creatures as well...I do not believe a word of what he says and do not believe he meant any of his apology.
When will our society come to realize that media sensationalism such as Mr. Vick is receiving will only continue to promote behavior like this? Why is our legal system jammed with ridiculous cases which impede the system from dealing with the true criminal cases appropriately? Here we have another high profile personality who obviously feels he is above the laws that pertain to the "common" people. What is to be gained by placing a person like Vick in prison? Does anyone think that he is going to spend any time in a regular prison? Even if he does, his celebrity status will assure he gets the best. Come on, why add someone like Vick to an already crowded prison system and make this celebrity a tax burden on the paying public, many of whom can't afford to see him play if they wanted to? Is Vick really a criminal? Not really. Is prison of any value with someone like Vick? Not really. Have we seen a changed, repentive Martha or Paris since their prison stays? So how should our society deal with these celebrity criminals and hoods? Hit them where it counts.

Slap Mr. Vick with a $20,000,000 judgement to both, PETA and the Humane Society. That's $40 million of his future earnings to pay for the unspeakable acts played out against defenseless animals, both dead and alive.  Then have Mr. Vick contribute all of his off season time for the next 8 years to work with animal rights groups. That's right Mr. Vick, no swanky resort vacations with the buds for quite some time!
Then, at every game that Vick plays in, he must publicly admit his guilt and beg forgiveness during each half time period.

Public humiliation is what will bring these celebrity types into line. It will provide them the opportunity to honestly earn the respect of the fans and young, impressionable people and demonstrate what these special people are really made of. Perhaps once our celebrities realize that their behavioral misfortunes and bad decisions will be met with significant amounts of humble pie and substantial financial penalties, they will once again accept the responsibility that is an inherent passenger to fame and fortune.
Michael Vick hung dogs, he beat them to death, stuck electrical charges up their bum and sprayed them with water to electrocute them, drowned them, starved them, made them fight for their lives, and put a bullet through their brains when they disappointed him.  How is that not reprehensible behavior?!  How can you morally accept that?  Yes, we have all made MISTAKES but what he did was pre-meditated & evil.  Hunters & farmers do not brutalize animals just for fun- Michael Vick did! Shame on you for not recognizing sociopathic behavior!
Beaten dogs getting hanged while still struggling for life, then forcibly drowned and heavens knows what else and Mr.Vicks calls this imature action!!
The only positive thing this man has done is call world attention to this horrible practice. I live in Brazil and had never heard of this man before, now he is famous everywhere for torturing animals.
He made a mistake?  A MISTAKE???  A mistake is when you leave your iron on or make a math error.  What he did was a deliberate, planned, disgusting on-going illegal act.  Yeah, he's sorry - sorry he got caught and his career is over.  He has no pity for the way those poor animals suffered and died and I have no pity for him.  With all his wealth and fame, he could have been such a hero and example to young people but instead he chose to wallow in his own perversion.  He could rot in jail and he will never really understand what he did wrong.
