For all the attention New Orleans has received, from us and other media, the Katrina 5th anniversary coverage (just about all of it) was short on the Mississippi story of recovery. The storm made landfall there. What we saw during our various trips to Biloxi and Waveland was breathtaking—absolutely horrifying. New Orleans received most of the coverage for a lot of reasons: its size and standing as an American city, the engineering failure following the storm, the depth of the human suffering at the hands of their government, and the sheer mass of humanity abandoned and needing rescue.
Kathleen Koch, a correspondent for CNN, has written a book about the loss of her family home in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. She was kind enough to send me a copy—it’s a compelling story, which I could not follow on the air at the time because we were so busy with our own coverage. In an interview today, Kathleen said friends of hers in Mississippi were angry that President Obama didn't stop in their state as part of the 5th anniversary remembrance. Her request of the national media is this: "Give us an 'atta-boy'—give us some credit for what we have done." The folks in Mississippi who have battled back from this storm deserve credit indeed, along with our continued attention.
It’s been a nasty day of beach erosion along my beloved New Jersey Shore. Other folks are having a tough time in what is left of Earl. We'll cover it tonight. We hope you will join us.

Not bad here on the shore in Jeresy with Earl.
Brian they say sometimes to you to see the same thing twice. Jeb Bush gave his brother the votes from the State of Florida long before the election and now Senator Mitch McConnell announced he had his votes to be re elected so need to for voters to bother on election day. Karl Rove's handy work done again, at lease the DOJ have advance notice of corruption.
Gov. Brewer had a good thing going in Arizona but she and her partners got greedy now their scam is busted by Arizona TV Station CBS. Brewer doesn't even have time to cover her tracks as the DOJ is already on the case. Brewer is so scared she can't snpeak. Governors from other States thought Brewer was really concerned about immigrantion issues as they joined in not knowing it was all about getting Federal money for arrested immigrants.
Have a great weekend everyone I'm going to see Takers at the movies
Hi Ms. Rawlings and all:
What a screwy Arizona Governor debate? (I know this is off topic but Jackie..please bear with me)-
Oh my, we saw bits of the debate on Thursday's Countdown and clips of it on Friday's MSNBC's coverage.
Did the Governor have a brain freeze? A pal text me saying that "the freeze" was a 10 second freeze. Radio said today, "we, our country, accept anyone to govern." TRUE.
Being a Floridian and was totally consumed with election 2008, I learned that it was the butterfly ballot that confused many and votes were cast incorrectly.
Now, here is where I am getting myself into trouble!! Sorry the President is not able to clone himself. Everything he does earns criticism. He went to Maine on vacation with his family and right wing FOX..Fix News, Fox NOISE..spent 20 minutes discussing why he and the family should have chosen THE GULF as a vacation spot instead and "Walk the Talk."
The Prez now goes to Louisiana (the hardest hit area) and here in Today's post ..more "silly" criticism.
Early this morn, my Mom saw a story featuring the Obamas. I believe she said it was on ABC..and my Mom talks of Malia and Sasha.
During our chat, my Mom said the darnest thing-
"President Obama jumps the hoop and tries to please every silly criticism."
I wonder..did George Bush face such criticism?
Bush is known to raise the middle finger to those who disagree and criticize.
Brian, leave it to the British to waste time doing a survey on men not asking directions when driving when they
don't know what they are doing with the massive oil spill. As the tv commerical says, even kids know when
they are getting the runaround. Have a nice weekend!!! Phyllis
Good Evening Mr.Williams, A fine broadcast as always! I agree with you in this posting that the people of Mississippi have battled back after Hurricane Katrina five years ago and certainly are resilient. Both the people of Louisiana and the Mississippi battled hard to rebuild their communities and much progress has been made with more to come.
Now on to the broadcast. First of all the report by Mr.Alexander on Hurricane Earl which is now very much weakened. Seeing Mr.Roker and Mr.Cantore from the Outer Banks of North Carolina the area was getting hit hard by rain and wind. The Jersey Shore having some beach erosion (I am sorry Mr.Williams, I hope it isn't too bad.)and also Long Island. Now Cape Cod and Nantucket braces for the storm which could causec problems for the area. Hopefully, it will not be too bad and passes quickly.
Terrible to learn of an earthquake of 7.4 in New Zealand. Looked like alot of damage to the city. Never heard of sand volcanoes. Interesting.
The piece by Norah O'Donnell about the First Daughters Sasha and Malia told of how the President and First Lady have them keep a busy schedule of many activities and a traditional way of living. Not alot of distractions and that is good. Leading a disciplined, healthy, happy life.
The "Making A Difference" segment by Mr.O'Neil was so moving with regards to the American Flag that flew at Ground Zero on September 11th and survived before, during and after the attacks. All the different people from around the nation, first responders and many other people all contributing to stitching the flag back together is just a real touching symbol of resilience of the American people. The spirit of helping and a symbol of freedom. So very heatwarming and touching.
Thank You for the broadcast Mr.Williams. Have a wonderful Labor Day Weekend! Peace to You and to All!
Lots of Love to Laurel,Jackie,Stephanie,Claudia,Celine,Anna,Lori,Cary and Matt!
Be Well Always!
Stay Extra,Extra Safe and Well Richard! Hope you are enjoying being back home!
Take Extra,Extra Good Care Richard and Crew!
XOXO
Lisa
I have been waiting on others opinions-
I will comment based on impact.
(Before I say more..a lot of British bashing lately..from those who once shared love for the Queen, Brits..and all..)
Malia and Sasha not having cell phones. WOW!! The girls making their beds and fixing their own breakfast..considering the White House staff ..at beck and call.
These rules are good parenting. Two beautiful girls and Michelle and the Prez are good parents. Most impressed with the revealing bond they have with both parents.
Study of men's refusal of seeking directions is spot on. Wasted lots of hours stuck in a car, lost, all due to male ego. Great study, Great Britain!! So down with the study. Waste of money and gas riding around in circles.
Saving and restoring the American flag. Sometime ago, a visitor from London came to visit (or as the Brits say "came to stay") and she loves America and everything American. SHE SHOWED her love for our culture, our beliefs, our lovely landmarks but what I was struck most by is her love for the American Flag. Whenever she saw the Flag, she stopped and took a photo.
"Only a FOOL says there is no God."
1. Seeing, knowing, studying anatomy, the human body and its perfection proves the existence of an INTELLIGENT DESIGN.
2. DNA. Separates us from millions. Unique. Perfect.
3. How does one explain the complexity of the moon, the sun (a star so hot ..humans cannot go near)..how does one explain animals of the earth and fish of the sea.
4. Explain the amazing miracle of birth.
"HE spoke into the darkness and created the light."
The Lord God made the heavens and the earth-
and everything was Good and VERY Good- Genesis.
For those with different views, I have to respect your beliefs..
But, please respect mine!!!!!
Awesome Nightly News and ..MY God is an awesome GOD.
I find it very interesting how you write, "For those with different views, I have to respect your beliefs. But, please respect mine!!!!!" Moments earlier, you wrote, "Only a FOOL says there is no God." That doesn't sound very tolerant or respectful.
"1. Seeing, knowing, studying anatomy, the human body and its perfection proves the existence of an INTELLIGENT DESIGN."
How? You didn't really explain that. If anything, it proves the existence of evolution.
"2. DNA. Separates us from millions. Unique. Perfect."
Humans and chimps share 96% (or more) of their DNA. Again, this clearly demonstrates evolution. How does unique and perfect DNA prove the existence of a deity?
"3. How does one explain the complexity of the moon, the sun (a star so hot ..humans cannot go near)..how does one explain animals of the earth and fish of the sea."
Any legitimate book on astronomy or physics would explain the sun and planets (the moon was part of the earth that was dislodged 4.5 billion years ago in a violent collision with a mars-sized body). Animals are easily explained by any legitimate book on evolution.
"4. Explain the amazing miracle of birth."
Please ask any physician--they will explain the "miracle" (actually the process) of birth. Birth began as single-celled organisms reproduced asexually. As species evolved, birth also evolved to eggs and finally to live birth. Extremely complicated but easily explainable.
I find it very interesting that in all the recorded years of human history, there is not a single shred of evidence that supports the existence of a deity. If anyone can prove that their deity exists, I will gladly be the first in line to pray at their house of worship.
A Brief History of Religion:
The earliest humans were, compared to modern humans, quite ignorant. They knew, for example, that rain helped their crops, but they had no idea how rain was actually produced. One day, when it had not rained for weeks, an early human looked up to the sky (where rain came from) and asked for rain. Ten minutes later, it was pouring. He ran back to the village and told everyone that it rained because some entity in the sky heard his plea and made it rain. And they all believed him. That's the origin of theism. Deities (early man was polytheistic) were created to explain all the things that humans simply didn't understand. What made the moon and sun? The moon god and the sun god. What made rain? The rain god. How does birth happen? The fertility god. Every culture (the Greeks, the Egyptians, the Romans, the Mayans, the Native Americans) had their own set of myths to explain the unexplainable. And that made sense. If there's something you can't explain, you make up a story to explain it. Children do that all the time. It's human nature. But now that we understand things, it's time to place all the old myths in their historical context. We know where the moon came from. We know where the sun came from. We know where rain comes from. We know the biological reasons that lead to birth. We know what "Noah's Flood" actually was (there was an excellent PBS documentary on it several years ago). We're in the 21st century. We can build planes that fly. We have decoded human DNA. We are rapidly discovering how to cure diseases. Our knowledge of our own world (and other worlds) has increased a thousandfold--maybe a millionfold--in just the past century. But some people still cling to the same myths that our earliest ancestors believed in. Of course, I'm an optimist. Compared to other species, humans have been on this planet for only a very brief period. In the amazingly short time of several thousand years, humans have gone from polytheists to monotheists. And it shouldn't take long for us to go from monotheists to zerotheists. Can you imagine what our scientific knowledge will encompass a thousand years from now? It's impossible to imagine. But certainly our knowledge at that time will preclude the belief in deities. It's inevitable.
Any comments in quotation marks are not my words.
I am repeating and revealing someone's quote-
"Only a fool..." is directly from the Bible.
I read your post..don't agree ..but as I said..
I will respect others..the same way others need to respect my beliefs..
I have no interest to persuade or convince ...it is not my DNA.
The amazing part of the debate if God exists or not- is that those who question existence feel they are in control.
But they are not. They do not control their birth, or any illness, or life unexpected events, and if tomorrow they face death..they have no power to stop it. We are helpless to some unknown force.
Why is it that everyone feels the need to attack me. Am I the only blogger?
Brian,
I suppose Hawkins (I may not have his name spelled correctly)" may be forgiven if he has not had a
religious experience and felt the mighty power of God. Clarence Darrow, a brilliant lawyer, once asked
did a Super God make the creator who did create the consenting pandas. As Isaiah wrote, do not
hide from your own needs and flesh. (Isaiah 58)
Brian: I agree that Mississippi didn't receive much coverage during the 5th anniversary of Katrina. Those rersidents along the coastal areas were hit plenty hard! As you said, New Orleans received more coverage because it's a reknowned American city. So, to the coastal resident's of Mississippi I say "Atta Boy!" President Obama should have visited those Mississippi coastal towns during the anniversary, because the last I heard, That state is still on the Gulf Coast. I'll say it again Mississippi, "ATTA BOY!"
Michelle, The British also think there is a lot of unfair British Bashing. Of interest, perhaps, the year 2012 is
Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee which you may already know as you so admire her. Phyllis
Hey Phyllis
At lunch..at work..and I was about to read again NBC Fan's post ..(his post and info is way above my head) and then I see your post.
No, this info about the Queen is all new to me.
Here's something for you and all the DN bloggers..
Based on the economy (and I just posted my blog about a talk in the office this morning about "missing" jobs)
A.M. Radio reported that midst this economic mess, cosmetic surgery is still strong among teens and twenty-somethings -opting for implants, lifts and tucks.
How is this???...when money, they say is scarce.
Talk radio also reported that Democrats will take a whipping come November.
So many funny stuff, hilarious chat on the way to the office this morn!
Michelle,
D-Attorney Jack Conway has my support for the Senate in Kentucky and I hope he wins big over R-Rand Paul.
who I believe reads Ann Rand (Fountain Head, Atlas Shrugged) and according to National Review she was
a greatness stunted by hate. Anyway, I just got back from Barnes & Noble and picked up three magazines:
National Review, Louisville (Fight for the Senate...inside the campaigns of Jack Conway and Rand Paul and
The Atlantic. Jack Conway, all the way!!! Have a great weekend! Oops I forgot I was in Bible Study
when I came across the info about Queen Elizabeth and thought I would share with you. Phyllis

Just got home and no Nightly News. Bummer.
It will be an exciting midterm election. Learned that Labor Day officially begins the election battle, rolling up the sleeves and campaigning heart and soul.
I wonder will Senator Barbara Boxer survive her bulldog competitor.
Fiorina has a loud bark and a brutal bite.
Michelle, no Nightly News, yes, a bummer but I did tune in to Today this morning. I think a lot of Lester
The mid-term election will be exciting, and I think it will be a win for the Democrats. In my opinion, the
Republican Party must return to its message of faith if it wants a victory in 2012. Just my two cent worth.
"Return to faith." Phyllis..you're smart-right?!
Why is faith the only avenue for success?!
"God is not an errand boy."- so says my aunt, a RN and a Republican.
My opinion-
(And here comes more hate mail..)
Republicans can use faith (cuz faith strengthens one and the family) but they need to offer solutions instead of NO to what the other side of the isle offers.
The GREAT thing about MSNBC is that smart commentators and politicos are cornered to offer options to what DEMS offer. I listened carefully..and there are have no solutions.
Watched Lester Holt's DATELINE MYSTERIES on 57 in the wee of the morn. SCARY Folks out there.
And Ms. NY is playing, now: MARIAH CAREY.
"Today", please have her on to sing her blues.
hola, brian, i need new glasses, so it was awhile back when i got my last ones and when i went back in because they broke one of the clearance frames i had chosen so i had to choose another one, i'll be darned but while i tried on several frames, there came in a young man who looked like he could have been a young, healthy stephen hawkings. and when i went to portland in june, there was a young man on board who could have been an 18-yr. old prince william. and when i got to portland, prince harry could have been standing in the chute as we left the plane. one just never knows what one will see these days! if you read the description of the size of noah's ark in the bible, it wouldn't have been big enough to hold a whole heck of alot of two of anything. it might have been a good size for a DNA bank. maybe what came through the big bang was a DNA noah's ark. kind of like what we would send into space now as we anticipate the likelihood of the destruction of our planet by various means, nuclear or global warming. and spirit never dies, so . . . . . i ordered a face lotion brand origins today that has trehalose in it, that can come from the resurrection plant that is also called the rose of jericho. i googled the plant and it is small now and exists in the desert but much of our coal is comprised of what it used to be 345 million years ago, a very tall tree, 100 feet, that had a 6 foot diameter. so goes evolution. the small plant is used for hydration and ph balancing in cosmetics. my poor face has been breaking out like crazy. i sure hope that white tea lotion and the mega-mushroom treatment lotion with mushrooms, ginger, holy basil and other good stuff in it helps! i hope it helps with the painful inflammation. i put make-up on when i go out so that i don't scare people! when i read michener's book 'chesapeake' years ago, one of the things that struck him and me was the amount of erosion that has taken place from the timeframe of the story line to today. here, in garden canyon, up on ft. huachuca, they are doing an archeological dig, hohokam indians, and something older, kind of like the small skull in the national geographic a couple of months ago. they have found a back to the future large electrical component that might be a switch. some creative souls are postulating that the switch may have been used to turn on the hologram of the ultra-modern society that created the small skull species for laborers. so, who knows what exists right next to us, in a higher realm?! we can see things in our 3-d because light is at a specific wavelength. if we changed that wavelength a wee bit, alot of things would be invisible! hope you have a great labor day, blessings, anna martina
