The rule of five

Supreme Court buffs know that the late Justice William Brennan was keen on math -- always holding up five fingers to indicate a majority -- "the rule of five." And today the majority ruled on the subject of global warming and government accountability. We'll look at the gravity of this case tonight. We'll also look at one of the states leading the way. With well over a year to go before the election, the tea-leaf readers turned money counters today. For now, fund-raising is the only game in town for political junkies, and tonight we'll run through the cash raised thus far, and the surprises on the list. We'll also cover topics from airlines to autism, from pollen to the pope. It's shaping up to be a very good broadcast.

THE SCENE OF THE CRIME
Earlier today, I stood in the kitchen, in the very spot where Tony has stood in his robe on so many mornings. I reached into the refrigerator and pulled out a carton of orange juice, and I turned around to talk to Carm, who was sitting at the kitchen island. And it was all real. I was in Tony Soprano's kitchen. I was talking to his wife. I had just spoken with Phil Leotardo and Bobby Bacala -- and minutes later I had a talk with A.J. about his future, before spending a few minutes with Tony himself. Even better: none of it was a David Chase dream sequence. However, while it was all real, I was also surrounded by reminders of where I was. While Tony's coffee cup and raisin toast were still on the kitchen table, just outside the window the shrubs were plastic. There was a giant light stand where the edge of the pool should have been. While the back office at the Bing seemed so familiar, the calendar on the wall contained no mention of the year. That's because I spent the morning on the Soprano's sound stage, preparing a report that will air very shortly about the end of the run. We had a great time with the cast and crew, from creator David Chase on down. Everyone was very generous with their time (and trusted us with their secrets), while dealing with the palpable feeling that an era is coming to an end. I felt fortunate to witness the filming of the last-ever Soprano family scene in the kitchen of their home on the cul de sac in North Caldwell, N.J. At least I could have sworn we were in North Caldwell. It was a lot different than our last field shoot, which I believe was in Ramadi, Iraq. Even though we were surrounded by some dangerous characters today, I've never felt more welcome. Watch this space for an air date.

Back to the day job and the real world. We hope you can join us for tonight's broadcast of NBC Nightly News.
